Cage Says ‘Ghost Rider’ Sequel Is Not A Sequel

Total Film interviewed Nicholas Cage the other day about his upcoming (not a) sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In the Interview Cage explains this is not a sequel because the first film was Ghost Rider and this one is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. See the difference?

I’ll let Nic explain it himself:

“I don’t see this as a sequel at all,” he told us. “I see this as Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. The other movie was Ghost Rider. This movie is Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance.

“Johnny Blaze is in a much different place in this movie. It’s a much edgier, almost cynical interpretation compared to the first Ghost Rider. Because in that movie, Johnny was trying to keep everything at bay, to keep things from erupting.

“I couldn’t get my head around how I was supposed to perceive something like that to be a hero, so I was automatically attracted to that complexity.

“It’s easy to love Superman, it’s easy to love Captain America, but it’s a challenge to love the Ghost Rider. As I got older that carried on into my dramatic work – I’m always looking for flawed characters who have a pathos and a kind of tragedy to them.”

Everything is crystal clear now, right?

Personally I found Superman and Captain America easier to love than Ghost Rider because they’re actually good movies.

Neveldine and Taylor, the guys who brought us the Crank films, are behind the mayhem this time, which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence for me. Also, Vengeance got a PG-13 rating. What’s up with that? I thought I remember the filmmakers saying this one would be an R?

Oh well, you can catch Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in theatres February 17.

Huh, a sequel to a bad movie, made by mediocre one-trick-pony fimmakers, that was shot for R and trimmed to PG-13? With Nic Cage. Gosh, what could go wrong?

At least it has Idris Elba and Christoph Lambert to pique a bit of interest from me.

Didnt realize this is being trimmed from R to PG-13. Ugh…really really UGH! I pay to see films as they were intended by the filmmakers not as some money grubbing Studio suit with a Business degree sees the film.
Filming action scenes is as much of an art form as any other type of scene and they definitely have a “natural flow” to them. Cutting up action scenes to remove “gore & violence” ruins the flow of the scenes and in some cases leads to anti-climatic scenes if the cuts are made at the end of the scene.
Anybody remember the theatrical version of Anton Fuqua’s King Arthur? If you missed it you’re better off. The Director’s cut on DVD is 10X better.
Look, I have NO problem with PG-13 movies that were CONCEIVED as PG-13 from inception but making major cuts to a film solely based off changing the rating is just plain wrong!

All I can picture is Andy Samberg’s “Nic Cage” voicing the quotes in the interview above. Just can’t take this guy seriously – after all, he has a kid named Kal-el…

That still remains to be seen. A flaming skeleton is not exactly the prime date-night movie for Valentine’s weekend. It’ll be competing with This Means War, which is a far better fit for that holiday, a new animated family film from Disney, and the second week of The Phantom Menace re-release.
