There’s no doubt that Latino Review has its fair share of international visitors, but most of the traffic comes from the United States. If the words “ang pow” sound like a bad Incredible Hulk movie to you, get ready for some education courtesy of The Borneo Post Online, and of course, Wikipedia. Thank God the blackout’s over. Pressing “X” before a page has time to display a heart-breaking message is stressful stuff.
A lot of theater chains have their own promotional stuff that they give out prior to or during an anticipated film’s release. In Sibu, a town in Malaysia, the Star Cineplex is in the midst of giving out ‘The Avengers’ ang pows in commemoration of the Chinese New Year. The gift items — which are the color red for various cultural reasons, one being an effort to ward off bad luck and/or spirits — are being given out at the theater from January 23 (today) until January 28.
Within these ang pows — or “red envelopes” — are typically money. It sounds similar to a North American gift card, as in the giver doesn’t want to outright hand the receiver a wad of cash, but with more historical significance to it. Presumably, the theater is not giving people money, however. It’s more like, “here’s a lovely ang pow that you can fill with your own money and give to someone.” Often the envelopes are given at either happy occasions (weddings) or sad ones. (funerals) Hopefully those who will give these as gifts will use them appropriately. Most people frown on being handed an image of Captain America shortly after their father’s passing.
So, who’s making the journey to pick up one of these bad boys? Or are you in the area already?

The superhero ensemble film hits North American theaters on May 4, 2012.
