ABKing Rants About ‘Expendables 2′ Rating, and A Bit About Terminator 5

Unless you haven’t been online in the last couple of weeks, you know Expendables 2 is going to be a PG-13 rated action film. This was first announced by Chuck Norris then confirmed by Stallone himself via AICN. Needless to say, the fan community is not at all happy about this, and I don’t blame them one bit.

One especially angry person is ABking, the self professed ”BIGGEST SLY and ARNOLD FAN EVER”. He took to the web and went on quite a rant at TheArnoldFans.com about the wimpified Expendables 2.

Here’s and excerpt:

“What made the first EXPENDABLES movie awesome besides seeing all those action stars together was that it was a throwback to seeing bad guys get blasted away real good like in such classics as DIE HARD, RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, TOTAL RECALL, CLIFFHANGER, MISSING IN ACTION, DOUBLE IMPACT, TRUE LIES, DEMOLITION MAN, THE LAST BOYSCOUT, LONE WOLF MCQUADE, ERASER etc.

“The fact that Sly, Chuck Norris, Avi Lerner, Simon West etc. decided to WATER DOWN and gut this franchise on the second film is going to backfire in a BIG way. People automatically assume that PG-13 means more butts in the seats. WRONG!!! Not for a franchise series like THE EXPENDABLES. Two points…1) the franchise did not start out PG-13 like say MISSION IMPOSSIBLE or BOURNE. Had it started out as a PG-13 then that would be fine. BUT it started out R. By dropping the rating it seems like the film is going in the wrong direction and it is telling the fans and the public ‘hey we are more family friendly, bring the kids.’ If a films rating starts out PG-13 and then goes to R with a second film at least you can say ‘hey they upped the ante’…NEVER do it the other way around. 2) A film like EXPENDABLES begs to be R rated. I mean lets get real here: a movie starring STALLONE/SCHWARZENEGGER/WILLIS/VAN DAMME/CHUCK NORRIS does not scream PG-13. It MUST be an R rated movie, PERIOD! There are going to be SOOO many people that are going to wait for the possible “unrated cut” on blu ray that they are not going to pay to see this in theaters.”

This is only a portion of the rant, click on the link below for the whole thing.

ABking makes some great points. Unlike other recent action franchises that were started as PG-13 films, The Expendables was marketed as a hard R-rated action film. It promised to bring the baddest asses in action together for an all out R-RATED spectacular. Who wants to see this franchise cut to a PG-13? And just because Chuck Norris wanted it that way? Whatever, I’ll be skipping this in theatres if Stallone and company stick with this childlike rating.

On top of all this PG-13 nonsense producers of the next live action Terminator film have come out to talk about that film’s rating. TheArnoldFans.com is reporting Terminator rights owner Megan Ellison has promised T-5 will be R-rated. This is not to be confused with the animated Terminator 3000 which is shooting for a PG-13 rating.

What do you think of this Expendables crap? Is Chuck Norris worth losing most of the fan-base of the first film? I say no, he’s definitely not worth that. Not one little bit.

I also have a couple of new set photos from Expendables 2 featuring Sylvester Stallone and Jean-Claude van Damme.

MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY thats all the studios care about. I find it hard to believe that Norris is the one who convinced the studios to change this. Any one who thinks this is an idiot.

    Traitor!

I have no problem with the pg-13 rating if all they did was change some words around……just dont touch the action.

  • Anonymous

I dont go see movies like this for the cuss words…

  • Anonymous

I didn’t care for the first one much, and more or less gore wouldn’t have changed my opinion all that much, really. If its a good story, I don’t care too much if they have to tone things down, and if its a bad story, no ammount of over-the-top violence or language will save it.

I won’t be going to see it. To pay out and line the pockets of producers / execs who don’t give a crap about the mature audience is sending them the wrong message. If they make less on this one, it will speak volumes and they will learn an important lesson. I agree totally with ABKing. Sick of seeing watered down kiddy crap.

    THEY DREW FIRST BLOOD!!!

they would ultimately have to cut the action down..if you saw the first film you would know what im talking about. The cant show dudes bodies blown into pieces by a nade launcher in a pg-13 environment…

  • Andrew Rossovich

there was a story in the first one?

Oh, yeah, Rourke said something about not wanting to kill hot chicks he thought he loved

    Now I remember.

Hell, Rambo 2′s 5min boat scene “what mean expendable” had more story in it than this entire film.

You can blow s–t up Bay style – doesn’t make for any decent story.

  • Andrew Rossovich

    Expendables was such tripe.

Hey, they know that 2 isn’t going to make that much $$.

It was garbage and people who were genuine action fans were embarrassed when they saw how awful this was…

THEY NEED KIDS SEEING IT TO MAXIMIZE PROFIT

    HOLLYWOOD DOESN’T GIVE A F-CK ABOUT YOU

IT’S ABOUT $$$ — UNLESS THERE’S A NEW TESTAMENT MESSAGE – SEE, YOU CAN’T MAKE THOSE FILMS EVEN IF THEY MAKE CRAZY $$$ (i.e. “The Passion” – not debating whether it’s a good/bad film – but, it’s all about money…only to a certain point…you’ve GOT to be part of the “Chosen” in hollywood or you ain’t sh-t.

lolwat 300 says hi along with a shitload of shitty comedies all R rated. It sounds like you are trying to take a cheap shot a The Passion.

  • Anonymous

Well, I didnt exactly find the first one that good to start with. Would have prefered a hard R…but i can also deal with it since the cast is better this time around.

  • Anonymous

perhaps, then this is essentially going to be another A team

“there was a story in the first one?”

    Thus my saying I didn’t like it….

Havn’t seen the sequel, so I can’t say. Im funny that way – I don’t claim to know how something turns out until I actually see it.
