Giamatti Signs on for ‘Romeo and Juliet’

I’m sure you are thinking the same thing I am, There hasn’t been a new Romeo and Juliet movie out in about a year, what gives? Well, worry no more. Italian filmmaker Carlo Carlei is remedying this as wee speak.
Hailee Steinfeld, who broke out in the Coen Brothers’ superior remake True Grit, signed on to play Juliette quite some time ago. Variety tells us today that Paul Giamatti has signed on to play her star-crossed lover Romeo.

Wait, no… That can’t be correct.

She’s only sixteen and he’s like forty-five. I should read this Variety article again…

Okay, Paul Giamatti is going to play Friar Lawrence, a friend to both Romeo and Juliette. That makes a lot more sense.

The rest of the cast includes the much more age appropriate Douglas Booth as Romeo, with Ed Westwick and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Tibalt and Benvolio.

How do you feel about Romeo and Juliet as a story? Honestly, I hate it. I much prefer Shakespeare’s Hamlet or Henry V. The only version of R&J I’ve even come close to liking was Gnomeo & Juliet, that’s how much I hate this story.

It’s said this new version will be more accessible to the Twilight crowd. Yeah, I’m done now.

I have no problem with a new version. It seems one comes along for each generation. And really – its a story for teens. Adults aren’t really meant to connect with it.
