Matthew Vaughn Returns To Direct ‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel

Even though I’m personally not into mutants or any of the X-Men books or films, I will say that X-Men: First Class was one of the better comic book movies of recent years.

That plot line in the film where we see Magneto as a 1960′s era James Bond assassin was hot.

One of the things that made that movie work was director Matthew Vaughn and now Deadline is reporting that Vaughn is back for the sequel:

Fox has just closed a deal with Matthew Vaughn to come back and direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class, with Simon Kinberg writing the script and Bryan Singer back as producer.

What would be the storyline for the sequel? Vaughn told HitFix last year:

“I’ve got some ideas for the opening for the next film. I thought it would be fun to open with the Kennedy Assassination, and we reveal that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto. That would explain the physics of it, and we see that he’s pissed off because Kennedy took all the credit for saving the world and mutants weren’t even mentioned. And we could go from there, and I’ve got some fun ideas about what other mutants to bring in. I don’t want to tempt fate, though. If the film’s a hit, of course I’d be interested. I really enjoyed making it.”

What mutants will Vaughn bring back? Who knows. I will keep my ears open as I remember breaking some of the cast when the first film was being made.

This is good news!  First Class was probably my most enjoyable trip to the theater in 2011

Awesome, now he can trash Fox’s script and start over from scratch again.  Why don’t they just let him and his writer’s do the writing.  I remember all the rumours of how it wasn’t coming together from the studio.  Usual MO of corporate management heads posting blame if things didn’t turn out the way they want.

Magneto = Magic Bullet Theory explained!

But seriously, I’m in – Thought out of last summer’s 4 @ super-hero flicks, this beat out Thor, Green Lantern & Capt. America. If McAvoy & Fassbender sign on, this’ll be a winner…their chemistry as friends then antagonists was excellent

I’m really glad to hear this.  Although, if you think back, the movie was excellent whenever Magneto was on screen, mediocre when it focused on the kids and downright Green Lantern like whenever the horrible actress who played the white queen was on screen.  Very uneven script…although the (Spoiler)….
Shaw death scene was one of the best comic book movie scenes ever made.

Indeed and too true. You could see at the end that no matter how much they pitied and came to revile each others stance, they had a lot of respect and admiration for each other. Something that was pushed heavily in the comics but was missing sorely from Xmen 1 2 and 3.
