Zack Penn to Re-write Karate Kid Sequel

The Karate Kid remake was a surprise hit in 2010 grossing north of $170 million domestically and over $350 million worldwide, so, yeah, they announced a sequel fairly quickly.

Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris (both have contributed to the scriptf for Kung-Fu Panda and Robin Hood) were originally hired to write a script for The Karate Kid 2. Variety is now reporting Sony has brought in Zack Penn to rewrite Reiff and Voris’ draft. Penn is perhaps best known for writing The Incredible Hulk, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand.

Nothing is known about the plot at this point, however, leads Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan are expected to return.

I haven’t watched the remake, and don’t have any immediate plans to change that. It’s not out of devotion to the original, I just haven’t gotten around to it. I have heard it’s not that bad a film. What do you think? Have you seen it? Is it worth watching?

    Philip, it’s adequate.
Like room temperature water is adequate.
Jaden rotates: poser cool, brow furrowing & a bewildered look.
Best part is of course Chan, but he’s telephoning it in wholesale.
A big bonus-asset to film (thankfully) is the locations and striking scenery.

    best things about this movie.

Jackie Chan beats up little chinese kids.
    good cinematography of China.

    bad things about this movie.

the first song of the film is John Mayer’s “your body is a wonderland” i mean… what the fuck…? how is that relevant to their situation or the tone of the film or anything at all!?! fuck that still pisses me off…
the new “crane kick” if you will is this ridiculous half wire half CG stunt that looks and feels so awkward, not only because no human being could actually pull it off but he’s this little kid thats injured AND pulling it off in a national chinese martial arts tournament i mean fuck you choreographer. Mostly if you’re going to cast Jackie Chan as the new Mr. Miyagi why not use him to his full effect? his NATURAL stunt work is the best, not all the bull shit wire stuff they have him do in american films, i mean you’re in china, you have Jackie in his element, if J – Smith is going to learn ACTUALLY TEACH HIM, dont put him in a wire rig and do all the bull shit for him.

fail. this movie is fail. this sequel is fail.

The most irritating thing about this movie (apart from Jaden Smith) is calling it the Karate Kid when it’s clearly Kung Fu they’re all doing. But I guess it’s all the same to white folk. Just some Asian chop sockey nonsense. Chinese, Japanese, what’s the difference? Avoid it.

     Totally agree on both counts.

I was prepared to hate it, but I loved how they changed it enough that there was no Mr Myagi or Daniel san. So a film name change would have made it less seem like a reboot. Kung Fu kid would have pissed a LOT less people off.  Using Karate Kid trampled over the original. However, pleased to say the film did not. (Infact, aside from Jaden Smith and that silly hair-do, I almost prefer this over the original.)

I would love to see Chan kick more ass in this sequel though, he held back in the first. (In the sequel to the original film, Myagi does the fighting if I remember correctly.) Thats how this needs to go down.

    Scenery was stunning!

Honestly I actually kinda liked The Karate Kid remake. It’s actually just called Karate Kid out of respect for the original I believe. I thought that as annoying as Jaden’s character was, he really grew into someone I rooted for by the end and Jackie Chan actually did a pretty great job. They developed good chemistry and it made that scene where Jackie told the story about his family that much more impactful to me. Also the kids in that movie were brutal, I wasn’t expecting that lol. If the sequel can take the good parts about the first movie and expand upon them then I’ll check it out

    Jaden Smith

Is A Good Actor – that’s why he’s getting roles

It has nothing to do with who his father is

There are no other young black kids as talented I’m sure.

There is no nepotism in Hollywood.
