Dunstan and Melton Talk del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

If you’re a fan of the horror genre then you’ve probably heard of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. The two have written screenplays for the remakes of My Bloody Valentine and Piranha 3D as well as the Saw sequels and the Feast films. Now they are working in touching up the script for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.

FearNet had a chance to speak with the duo about Pacific Rim. Here’s what Melton had to say:

Pacific Rim is Guillermo del Toro’s new movie, which is coming out in 2013. It is going to kick major ass. It’s giant monsters versus giant robots, and Guillermo del Toro is the only person who could bring it to you. That was an amazing experience, because we read the script, and so we went in knowing what the producers and studio wanted us to do; and we went in and met Guillermo, and he started showing us the tests by ILM. They were just mind-blowing. I think they’ll probably show something at Comic-Con 2012. Because they should be done by then, or close to done by then. I’m telling you, it’s gonna rule Hall H when Guillermo, the king of geeks, comes out and shows some of the stuff he’s shot. People are gonna be blow away.”

And Dunstan:

“We’ve been denied a Guillermo del Toro movie for a few years now, and we had the feeling in sharing some time with him that there’s been a well, that became a dam, that became a crushing force waiting to burst and give everything to Pacific Rim. I think he’s the Santa Claus of fantasy, and he’s going to gift everyone with an experience. Bring dad, bring the kids, bring everybody, and hold on.”

They go on to say this will be a PG rated film, which I have no problem with. I don’t mind projects that are conceived and brought to fruition as family films. What bugs me is when they take a film concevied for an adult audience and water it down to a family film. Besides, with del Toro behind the camera, I don’t think we’re going to get the ususal “family” movie.

I’ve been looking forward to this since I first heard about it a while back. Are you guys psyched or does the PG angle bum you out a bit?

Pacific Rim hits theatres May 10, 2013. It stars Idris Elba and Ron Perlman.

I cannot contribute my opinion because I am still cracking up at the header pic.

I heard this was originally going to star Jason Statham and would have been called ‘The Pacific Rim Job’.
