Michael Bay Talks About the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

Director/Producer/Exploder Michael Bay was at the 2012 Nickelodeon up fronts the other day and spoke briefly about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film he is producing. You can check out the video below.

It’s not very long, only about fifteen seconds. Bay tells us these turtles are part of an ancient alien race and they will be tough, funny, edgy and lovable. That “edgy” thing bugs me. Edgy how exactly?

Also, alien race? I thought the turtles came from some radioactive ooze? My exposure to the Ninja Turtles has only been the cartoons and movies, is this “alien race” angle from the comic books?

At the end of the day all that matters is if the movie is good. Make a good movie and no one will complain. Well, someone will, someone always does, but it won’t be as bad as it will be if you make an all out terrible film.

Let’s talk casting. April? Casey Jones (assuming his character appears)? Master Splinter? The turtles? I’m guessing Splinter and the turtles will be digitally rendered based on motion capture performances. It’s probably the best way to get realistic performances and fight scenes.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are set to return to theatres Decmber 25, 2013. Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Wrath of the Titans) is directing.

I’m sorry, but don’t go messing up a good thing. The back story for these characters is pretty well accepted and there aren’t many reboots that work when you completely change the characters’ origins. Plus, if the Turtles are an “ancient alien race”, then how do you explain Splinter being in the mix? Just doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence for me in this project.

I got a bad feeling about this. Still it could be watchable. Not sure if ‘teenage’ and ‘ancient alien race’ go together very well. I would have preferred them described as ‘sarcastic’ rather than ‘edgy”

Bingo, you got it. How do you explain Splinter and ANY OTHER mutant for that matter?

They could’ve made Shredder the alien, like in the cartoon – a being who doesn’t age as fast as regular humans do. A being, who was responsible for the Shogunate to rule over Japan. But its best if Krang was a separate entity, like an overlord who shows up in the end if/when Shredder dies.

Give Cary Tagawa a call, I’m sure he’d be game to play him as well.

Ok, now that i’ve regained conciousness from hearing this idea, I am trying to make sense of it. Bad idea yes…

BUT,

I think i c see where theyre going with it. Maybe this is a better
story than Ooze infecting turtles and a rat who learned kung fu.

Instead, this “Race of beings” from another world “DIMENSION” could
mean we finally will get a few other Aliens….. KRAANG!!! And Bebob and
Rocksteady, and Foot soldiers that are aliens/robots like the cartoons.

I’m assuming the Turtles, being of one race, will come from a
Dimension, alternate reality and may end up persued by Kraang and the
Technodrome. And other Manimals will therefore exist, rather than using
Ooze. (Or, maybe the earth Animals were experimented on by Kraang,
turned into Humanoids etc..

Doesnt sound so bad when I think of it like that.

And the term Mutants, could still be used by us earthlings to explain half turtle men, rat, bebop etc…
