Okay, I’m just going to lay it on the line, I liked the Dark Shadows trailer. Until I saw it I wasn’t sure I about the film at all. I didn’t like any of the pics and I Johnny Depp looked like an WMO wannabe reject; but this shows me what a difference there is between still and moving images. I don’t think you can truly make a decision on an actor’s makeup or costume until you’ve seem them in action. As I’ve said before, they are called motion pictures for a reason.
Why am I going about Dark Shadows? Well, LA Times Hero Complex had a chance to talk about the film with Tim Burton. Here’s what he had to say about making Dark Shadows:
“It’s a different animal. If I go back and watch something like ‘Star Trek,’ it’s not that hard to analyze what the appeal was, and even if the show is dated you identify what it was that made it work. The ‘Dark Shadows’ appeal was a little more abstract. What I loved about it was the fact that it was a melodramatic soap opera, and, well, that flies in the face of any modern studio’s interests as far as moviemaking. But what we’ve gone for is a mixture, and that’s always what I’ve been interested in; I think most of my movies are mixtures of light and dark and serious things and things that have humor in them.”
I have to agree with Burton here, judging from the television show this does not seem like a project a major studio would want on it’s schedule. Especially as a summer release. If Johnny Depp wasn’t such a big fan of the show, this probably wouldn’t have ever come to fruition. Depp on Shadows:
“It was a real thing for me, I had to watch it, and it was tough because you’d miss the beginning — it started at like 3 p.m., but that’s when we got out of school. And then it moved later because all the kids wrote in letters. When you met someone who knew the show and loved it, there was an instant connection.”
I only know of this show because my cousin loves it. He watched it when it was and now he has all the DVDs. What’s that mean? It means I’ll most likely be going to this in the theatre, and I’m actually looking forward to it. Call me crazy, bit I think this may be a return to form for Burton.
Dark Shadows hits theatres May 11th. Will you be seeing it?
