In “American Reunion” all the “American Pie” characters we met a little more than a decade ago return to their high school reunion. In a long over due weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship. In the years that have passed Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) married while Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Vicky (Tara Reid) said goodbye. Oz (Chris Klein) and Heather (Mena Suvari) grew apart, but Finch (Eddie Kay Thomas) still longs for Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge). And Stifler (Sean William Scott) remains the same as he ever was.
At a recent press conference we had the opportunity to speak with the entire cast. We asked if it was easy coming back to the franchise, shooting the poster for this film, Jason going a bit further with his character, how easy it was slipping back into character and where they envisioned their characters would be 13 years later.
Tara when you heard there was going to be another American Pie with the entire cast was that an easy yes?
Tara Reid: Yeah once I knew everyone was back it was an easy yes cause there is this magic in this cast when you put all of us together. There is this great chemistry that comes out cause there’s just so much fun.
Chris what was it like shooting the poster in the same exact way that you guys shot the poster for the first film?
Chris Klein: At first I didn’t get it I was like what was going on, this felt strangely familiar. I think I missed the note that we were recreating the very first poster. It was just surreal. We have such a beautiful time making these movies and the chemistry you can’t create that it’s real and you see it.
In this film Jason you go a step further then the very first “American Pie” how did that conversation come about?
Jason Biggs: The penis has been a major player in the American Pie franchise; it has been it’s own character, so it was about time. In the conversation I was pushing the writer/ director for that pie scene and what was going to be the pie scene this time, and the first few drafts sounding like it was missing something. I told them guys I will do anything as long as it makes sense and is in the context of the film and as long as I think it’s funny. Then they pitched me the idea and asked if I was willing to show my penis, then I said yes it sounds funny. It was also Alyson’s first day of shooting.
Sean was Stifler a character that was easy to slip back into?
Sean William Scott: Yeah, I was lucky to be part of the process early on and I thought about what I wanted him to be. But the first day was a bit hard I was tripping over myself but then after that I just slipped back in and had fun.
Sean did you find him exhausting to play?
Sean William Scott: The first day was because I over thought it. I was just wondering if he would be so high energy in the third one, he was kind of a cartoon character but now I’m 35 I just don’t know if I could pull it off.
Jason how did the dominatrix scene come about?
Jason Biggs: The dominatrix scene was early in the script and I thought great this is funny but what’s the next step. The film was written brilliantly I think it’s the only one that comes close to the original ‘American Pie’. One of the biggest challenges was how much further could you go. These characters are in there 30’s so it’s creditably harder to find them in these situations. Some of things they did in the previous films would not be acceptable for 30 year olds. The penis scene did feel organic.
Jennifer what did you think about the story when it came to you?
Jennifer Coolidge: When I first meet with the writers and directors I liked the script but I did fight with them and I did say I really should sleep with Finch one last time. I was very firm about it at this dinner with them. They did say Stiflers mom needs to evolve and needs to grow and can’t be sleeping with this young boy anymore. I really don’t know how they convinced me because I’m very stubborn.
Jennifer where did you envision your character would be 13 years later?
Jennifer Coolidge: Well I’ve always pictured myself having had sex with Ozzy. No I really did I thought Stifler’s mom would move on to some other kid. The only one I knew I wouldn’t sleep with was Stifler. Never in a million years did it occur to me that they would hook me up with an adult. Seducing Finch was great because he didn’t know what he was doing but seducing an older man who doesn’t know what he is doing well…
Most Franchises seem to run out steam but this one seems like it isn’t, are you guys up for another two or three?
Sean William Scott: I like this movie so much and I hope we have that situation were this movie is well received and people dig it as much as we like it. I’m at a point where spending more time with these guys means more to me. I’d be happy to do this as long as it last because I had so much fun. I’m never going to win an academy award anyways so I might just have fun with my friends. Well Melissa McCarthy did shit in a sink and she got nominated and I did shit in a cooler in this film.
“American Reunion” is in theaters April 6th.
