It’s no secret Christopher Nolan loves shooting in IMAX. He shot forty minutes of The Dark Knight in IMAX and portions of Inception were also shot in the format. Now, we get word that The Dark Knight Riseswill feature over an hour of IMAX footage, the most ever for a film. Why dies Nolan like IMAX so much? Here’s what he told The Wall Street Journal:
“I remember [sitting in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and] looking at the audience every time a helicopter banked, and everyone was leaning slightly to the side. I had never seen an audience so immersed in a film.”
Now, unlike movies like The Amazing Spider-man, MIB 3 and Marvel’s The Avengers, among others, which are converted to IMAX, Nolan shoots the IMAX portions of his films in the format, using their cameras. This can, at times, be a bit cumbersome while shooting complex action sequences given the larger size of the IMAX cameras. That, however, didn’t stop Nolan:
“There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us. These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn’t make a feature film. It was absurd.”
