The long gestating biopic of Queen front man Freddie Mercury may have finally found it’s director in Stephen Frears. Sacha Baron Cohen is set to star as Mercury and will also be producing with Graham King.
Sources close to the production day there are still other directors in the running, but Variety hears it is Frears’ to turn down at this point.
The untitled film will chronicle the creation of Queen leading up to their performance at Live Aid in 1985. The film will not include Mercury’s death in 1991 from AIDs.
It also should be mentioned the surviving members of Queen (Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon) have formed Queen Films to produce the movie. Also, producers have obtained rights to Queen’s song catalog for use in the film.
