Blade Runner 2 Will Have A Female Protagonist

Oh Ridley Scott. I’m convinced this is your clever way of spoiling what the goo in the Prometheus trailer is:

“Ironically, here we are over 30 years later and I think you might not even argue it’s a prequel. Once you start into the evolution of the story, it moves so far away from Alien that there’s only the mere DNA of the original in Prometheus.”

But that’s not what we’re here to discuss.

The Daily Beast has an interview with Scott himself where he brings up some tidbits on his other projects people want him to do. Ridley Scott has a TON of projects on his potential slate. A. TON.

Who knows if his version of Monopoly is still floating around?

The focus of the interview is Scott’s use of strong female leads (Ripley to Thelma & Louise to Noomi Rapace in Prometheus) and uses that as a jumping off point to talk about his upcoming projects with female leads which surprisingly includes Blade Runner 2:

And your next project, after the Cormac McCarthy adaptation, The Counselor, also boasts a strong female lead.

I’m working on a project with Angelina Jolie called Gertrude Bell, which is a very interesting period piece of a woman in the 1900s whose tramping ground was very much part of Mesopotamia, which we now know of as Iraq. She’s involved with a person called King Faisal, and she was partly instrumental in seeing him to the throne of Iraq. She’s an important political figure.
What about the rumored Blade Runner sequel?

Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist.

Which sounds…just fine with me.

I’m curious if Ridely Scott watches the Total Recall remake trailer and is like: “Damn, that’s what I wanted Blade Runner 2 to look like.”

Fail, I have never seen a good film with a female lead that was not supported with a large male supporting cast.

I would love to see Rooney Mara take this

  • rsixsmith

i like rooney mara.  i’d love to see her play a nexus 6 replicant on the run… or on the loose!  i love blade runner, love the mood and themes and production design, all that.  it was a little slowly paced, though.  well, maybe not in terms of the actual screenplay and beats, but there’s SO MUCH of the ponderous camerawork coupled with droning synthesizers that is a little tedious for sci-fi a la philip k dick.  although presumably this next will be all scott & co’s baby.  which is great, bring it.

Yea she did very well..but again it was Danial Craig as the lead and she was a support actress.

     Your momma failed!

Elizabeth Salander is the main character in The GIRL with the Dragon Tattoo films. It’s her story from start to finish. Danial Craig’s character was just her quasi boyfriend.

Daniel Craig was great but Rooney owned that movie. I actually prefer her Lisbeth to Noomi Rapace’s

I don’t know what’s more ridiculous, the assupmtion that they can’t get a large male supporting cast for some reason, or the assumption that they can’t make it work otherwise.

  • myclawismypenis

I just watched a movie(the road 2011) where one of the females in the movie was more than formidable…she had presence and somthing wicked.

  • A_Wise_Man

Name a film that made it work…you can’t

  • A_Wise_Man

She wan not the lead character though.

  • myclawismypenis

She was the main character for tht segment of the film…it was broken into 3 parts.

  • A_Wise_Man

    Well there you have it.

  • myclawismypenis

BUT!!! i still agree with you…I think that another male can be a more physically adversary for another male. If its mental, then it may work. LOL

Uh…Alien? Not a large cast in that one, and most of them where men.

  • A_Wise_Man

You made my point, if any female can lead it has to be Weaver, and then she still has a large male supporting cast.

Heard good things about Hunger games.

  • A_Wise_Man

Yea, because she has supporting acting form that other kid, it is a 50/50 split.
