Prometheus, easily the most anticipated movie of the year, opens this Friday, June 8th and heralds the return of Sir Ridley Scott to science fiction since his 1982 masterpiece, Blade Runner, which many regard as as one of the only sci-fi movies next to 2001: A Space Odyssey that could actually be considered transcendental. The return to a genre that Scott helped define is not the only reason that people are so eager to see Prometheus.
The film, while not officially being called a prequel, expands upon the world Scott created in Alien and its events predate those of the original movie. Set in the late 21st century, the story centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they follow a star map discovered among the remnants of several ancient Earth civilizations. Led to a distant world and an advanced civilization the crew, consisting of Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Charlize Theron (Monster), Michael Fassbender (Shame), and Idris Elba (Takers), seeks the origins of humanity, but instead discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human race.
I recently had a chance to sit down and speak with Idris Elba who plays Janek, the captain of the spaceship Prometheus. The actor discussed inspirations for his character, embracing the themes of the film, and the creatures in his upcoming sci-fi monster film, Pacific Rim.
