After “The Ides of March,” actor George Clooney will return to the director’s chair for Focus Features’ “The Yankee Commandante.”
The story is based on the article that was published in The New Yorker on May 28 by David Grann. It is about William Alexander Morgan, an American who assisted Fidel Castro and Cuban rebels to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Morgan was regarded as a top foreign advisor to Cuban along with Argentinian Che Guevara and referred as Commandante.
However, he was very vocal in his anti-communist beliefs and his personal loyalties were questioned. He was arrested in 1960 in a plot to join the counter-revolutionaries and then shot to death by a firing squad in 1961.
Clooney and Smokehouse’s Grant Heslov will produce the project. “The Yankee Commandante” will be Clooney’s fifth movie as a director.
