The Lone Ranger has been filming since February with a revised budget. The execs at Disney originally told the filmmakers they needed to trim the cost from $250 mil to a paltry $215 mil. Star Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer acquiesced and filming has been underway. Unfortunately, the budget is ballooning.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Verbinski’s film is approaching the original price tag and possibly beyond. Here’s what some sources had to say:
“It’s up to a number they didn’t want.”
“It’s out of control, but if you were going to bet on anyone, it would be on Gore, Johnny and Jerry.”
Verbinski is being asked to cut scenes and rewrites are underway to stop the budget from getting too out of control.
For their part Disney is saying the budget issues are being exaggerated, and the word on early footage is that the film delivers. Some are saying The Lone Ranger could be as good, and as big a hit, as the original Pirates of the Caribbean. I guess we’ll have to wait until July 3, 2013 to know for sure.
