Unsurprisingly, ‘The Lone Ranger’ Is Over Budget

The Lone Ranger has been filming since February with a revised budget. The execs at Disney originally told the filmmakers they needed to trim the cost from $250 mil to a paltry $215 mil. Star Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer acquiesced and filming has been underway. Unfortunately, the budget is ballooning.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Verbinski’s film is approaching the original price tag and possibly beyond. Here’s what some sources had to say:

“It’s up to a number they didn’t want.”

“It’s out of control, but if you were going to bet on anyone, it would be on Gore, Johnny and Jerry.”

Verbinski is being asked to cut scenes and rewrites are underway to stop the budget from getting too out of control.

For their part Disney is saying the budget issues are being exaggerated, and the word on early footage is that the film delivers. Some are saying The Lone Ranger could be as good, and as big a hit, as the original Pirates of the Caribbean. I guess we’ll have to wait until July 3, 2013 to know for sure.

Now people don’t get me wrong, but i have the feeling that this will flop almost as John Carter. I can’t wait to see this flick but i have an bad feeling. People aren’t familiar with Lone Ranger as they weren’t with John Carter

Every update about this film seems to be negative. Has me a bit worried

Well, Carter didnt have Depp…but Dark shadows did, lol. Depends on how good it is.

Disney has no idea how to develop a film that isnt about some high school girl group getting a career in rocking out. The old Disney is dead.

Same. I’ve never followed Lone ranger at all, and I’m keen to see what they do with it.
But the feed back from John Carter gave me a ‘why bother’ attitude, still haven’t watched that!
    Will they learn?
Probably not! Just highlight “Johnny Depp” on the posters!

It’s a fucking Western, and they can’t shoot it for less than $250 million?! This shit should cost $50 million, but they’ve got Depp’s salary to think about, so lets call it an even hundred. Seriously, it’s cowboys, Native Americans and horses. Minimal sets, beautiful landscape that’s already, you know, THERE, and maybe two big set pieces – something with trains and something going boom at the end. How much could that possibly cost?

    Disney – Fire. These. People.

I don’t understand how a western can be overbudget. Those should be the least expensive movies in Hollywood to produce

It’s costing them like crazy because the Lone Ranger is going to be fighting Aliens. Wait a minute, I think I heard that before. Can’t remember. Probably some dumb over-budgeted movie that flopped!

I’m gonna watch this just so I can see what is costing so much f’n money in a Cowboy and Indians serial adaptation.
