Who Is Benedict Cumberbatch Playing In ‘Star Trek 2′?

There’s been a lot of speculation as to who the villain would be in J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot sequel. It was rumored to be Khan, arguably the best villain from the Trek universe, but when Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as the lead villain speculation began anew.

Digital Spy is reporting Karl Urban (McCoy) has let slip who Cumberbatch will be playing.

Urban on Cumberbatch::

“He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

So, Cumberbatch is playing Gary Mitchell. I have no idea who he is, but fortunately Digital Spy does.

In the Original Series Mitchell is a classmate of Captain Kirk’s from his days at Starfleet Academy. The two were buddies until “an encounter with a galactic barrier transformed him into a cruel, ruthless and supremely powerful villain.”

Will Abrams keep to Mitchell’s origin the same? This is an alternate Trek universe, so anything can happen, but I imagine he’ll stick fairly close to it.

Star Trek 2 hits theatres May 17th, 2013.

    If he is playing Mitchell; hopefully; there is a flashback scene of the acadmey. In the 2009 film, we only saw Kirk with Mccoy, but then again, kirk was at the acadmey for 3 years, so…hopefully we will see some of their friendship.

    Cute how you say he was “rumored” to play Khan – when this site made a big deal of drawing a line in the sand and declaring the villains IS, 100% Kahn – and anyone who says otherwise is lying…
    Of course, this is the site that insisted Abrams had been fired from the first Trek during filming, so nevermind…
