A Third Film to ‘The Hobbit’ is a Good Possibility

It turns out that director Peter Jackson wasn’t joking to the San Diego Comic-Con crowd about shooting more scenes to make “The Hobbit” series into a trilogy instead of a two-film adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers Pictures, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens with Jackson are looking into logistics into making a trilogy a reality.

A few hurdles will include securing new actor deals into a third movie and gaining certain rights associated with the property.

First film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be released later this year on December 14. The second film “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” will be released next year on December 13. So a third film will probably be released in December 2014.

So Hobbit fans can rejoice. It looks like Jackson may go there and back again…..and again.

At first I took this as good news; but now the more I think about it I ask myself, what can they do to make “The Hobbit” into a trilogy?

Good question. There are volumes of information and stories in the appendices to LOTR that could be used. The challenge would be keeping the narrative from being watered down. The Hobbit is a much shorter story to begin with, and the stakes much lower compared to LOTR.
Let us not forget that this will be seen as a shameless cash grab. I would prefer to see some extended edition blurays

  • Charles Jackson III

Is each Hobbit movie 2 hours? If so that’d be 4 hours of the novel which would pretty much cover everything in that short book. The third movie would have to be the appendicies and making a bunch of shit up to lik it to the LotR. I’m okay with that if they do it right, I guess :-/

then i say grab that cash. want some more of mine, pj? have at :) if they wanted to make movies out of the histories in the silmarillion, unfinished tales, etc., count me in. i don’t see how more middle earth can possibly be a bad thing with peter jackson or someone of his fantasy caliber in the driver’s seat.

I agree, No doubt PJ and the past execs of New Line are kicking themselves that this trend wasn’t thought of a decade ago bc they could have had 6 movies instead of the original three. As far as the Simarillion and other works are concerned, PJ is out of luck. Only the rights to LOTR and Hobbit were granted. The rest belongs to the Tolkien estate. Christopher Tolkien ( to whom we owe MUCH) is not enamoured of PJs work. Why he isnt in love with what has been put on screen, I have no idea

sure, we owe him credit for making sure the world got to see pretty well edited compilations of J.R.R.’s posthumous stuff. i’ll give him that. i just hope he doesn’t withhold the additional rights that the jackson crew are seeking because his personal tastes run counter to pj’s interpretation. somehow i don’t think he’ll be that big of a killjoy, but he was a pretty big baby about getting the hobbit in motion.
