‘The Hobbit’ Is Officially Three Films

There have been rumors and reports that Peter Jackson wanted to go further with his Hobbit films and make them into three flicks. While The Hobbit novel is relatively short, there is a wealth of other stories Tolkien wrote about Middle Earth; so it should be easy to extend the story.

Peter Jackson has gone to Facebook to announce The Hobbit will indeed be three films.

Here is Jackson’s post:

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life.  All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance.  The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, ”a tale that grew in the telling.”

Cheers,

Peter J

What are your thought on this? Do you think They’re milking the brand, or do you think this is a purely creative decision?

And this has nothing to do with Warner Bros not having any real franchises right now (with Harry Potter over, and Batman now awaiting reboot). Its just a coincidence that this trilogy woill take them right up to the planned launch of their JLA movies. Honest.

If anyone thinks that they’re “milking” this franchise, they are truly mistaken. We should be so lucky to have three Hobbit films from Peter Jackson. Frankly, we’re spoiled as movie-goers.

yeah, i don’t know how anyone can attribute the milk-it attitude to these films given that it’s almost a decade since we’ve had any middle earth movies. also, there’s the fact that none of the previous installments were sub par and, in fact, raised the bar for genre film making to an incredible standard- a standard that is unfortunately ignored almost always.

At first I thought they were milking it for cash, but there’s so much material in the appendicies, that they can film several more movies after The hobbit trilogy if they want to. They can even make an original epic based off some of the unseen characters.

There is always a fanatical incentive on the studio front to greenlight big budget movies, it’s an inherent part of the business, that doesn’t mean it is the only incentive to make more movies. Jackson clearly has a passion for the material and wouldn’t do it if there wasn’t an artistic drive to tell more of these stories.

Well, cant wait to see how it goes. Doesnt bother me>> as long as the quality of the 3 is on the same level as the LOTR trilogy..which really, doesnt have me worried.
