Keanu Reeves Says ‘Bill & Ted 3’ Has a Nice Story

A few days ago we ran a story about a long-gestating threequel to Bill & Ted becoming a very real possibility. The response was unexpected.

I couldn’t care less about a new film in this franchise. It’s not that I abhor the Bill & Ted films. I enjoyed them quiet a bit as a kid when they’d incessantly replay them on Saturday afternoons on local TV.

But I feel the years haven’t been kind to the original and its sequel.

And yet many of you do seem to care. In fact, I had no idea these movies were kinda-sorta revered as comedy classics. I guess I got off the Bill & Ted express train too early.

GQ’s put up a short interview with Keanu Reeves. They talk about some of his current projects and how it feels to get old. Then the conversation steered to Bill & Ted.

Reeves says:

“We have a nice story. We’ll see if anyone else wants to make it.”

The actor even offers a summary of the new film:

“One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven’t done it. So everybody is kind of like: “Where is the song?” The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future “us” refuses to tell us, and another future “us” blames us for their lives because we didn’t write the song, so they’re living this terrible life. In one version we’re in jail; in another we’re at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.”

Might I offer a title?

So, Matt Granados is a film fan who hates Bill & Ted. Sorry for you man, but the venom you spew is melting my flat screen. I understand you don’t get financial compensation for writing for LR, true or not, but why do you have to be the resident hater? Reading through past articles of yours, it seems you are a jaded film writer.

What movies DO you like? Could you give us a few titles?

While all of our opinions are like sphincters, the only point I was trying to make was that there are a wide variety of movies to be covered, you don’t seem drawn to any a personal level, that I’ve read. As a frequent flyer of LR bandwidth, I’m just curious as to where your film loyalties lie. I get my jollies off of the nostalgia films of my youth, other than your “every other Wednesday” payment, what blows your skirt up?

If we still can’t find common ground by then, I guess we’ll have to split up our assets and ask the kids who they want to live with.

Wow, this is partially on par with what I had in a dream. Except Ted was a Methhead, and Bill became a redneck…who was just about to throw himself from a barn, to hang himself.

I like the idea of a third Bill and Ted movie! I didn’t know that fans of these guys were rare until one of my friends I work with at Dish had no idea who I was talking about when I mentioned Bill and Ted. I feel it’s my duty to enlighten her with the excellent ways of Bill and Ted so I’ve added both of their movies to my Blockbuster @Home queue. If I recall correctly, the soundtrack to Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey rocked! I hope this new movie happens – I’d like to see Tenacious D become Bill and Ted’s mentors since George Carlin won’t be taking the role.
