Spielberg Testing IMAX Technology for ‘Robopocalypse’

Steven Spielberg is currently on a day-long press binge promoting next month’s release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in IMAX.

While he had a plethora of encouraging things to say about the picture and audio quality of Indy on the big-big-big-screen, the 65-year-old director mentioned that this probably won’t be his only use of IMAX technology.

Straight from the maestro’s mouth:

“I’m going to do an IMAX camera test, [both] a 2 and 3D test for my next movie ‘Robopocalypse,’ and I haven’t decided whether I’m going to use the IMAX cameras, and I haven’t decided whether it’s going to be 2D or 3D yet, but I am in September going to start doing some tests.”

If a great director like Christopher Nolan could stun audiences with his use of the IMAX camera in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, imagine what the greatest living filmmaker would do with it?

Robopocalypse will be Spielberg’s follow-up film after Lincoln.  It opens April 25th, 2014.

Please Mr Spielberg – no 3D!

Just FYI, Robopocalypse has been move to April 2014. I hope Spielberg does use the IMAX cameras to shoot this film, in 2D though not 3D.

Dude, you rock. Thanks for the correction.

It was just the way Nolan framed his shots and filled the entire Imax screen and less to do with the actual 65mm camera he rented. If Steven films on digital 3D and prints to IMAX 65mm film, when projected you will see the same level of detail.

IMAX is the best film format. Shooting on IMAX film still gives the best picture out there.

    NO 3D

  • myclawismypenis

3D is dead as far as home entertainment is concerned. Just have to see how long it takes to fizzle in the theater..even though it seems to be holding steady.

    had a comment…cant delete.

If morons paying for it, they will keep making it.

  • myclawismypenis

There you go..it cant be more truthful than that.

It’s really just a taste thing that 65mm celluloid gives a better image. IMAX Digital gives the same perceivable resolution.

  • myclawismypenis

Not really, IMAX film has better dynamics hands down. IF that wasnt the case, then you wouldn’t see all these film makers using it. So, its actually more fact than taste.

And what is the top Dynamic Rnage of 35mm? around 15 and you aren’t always getting that.don’t always want that. I don’t think 65mm has a higher Dynamic range than a Red Epic, think they are about the same there. It’s a nitpick that doesn’t make any real difference.

  • myclawismypenis

If it didnt make a difference..then this article wouldnt exist. TDKR wouldnt have been filmed in IMAX 65mm, and BRad Bird would not have said the thing that im saying just yesterday. So..argue all you want, digital is just not there yet.

Red epic…yeah. Im curious about that myself. I didnt catch the “epic” in red epic. I would like to see the red epic compared along side IMAX ..that would be interesting and really cool. So, good point.
