I imagine it was kind of odd for Robert Rodriguez when he offered Alexa Vega the racy role of Killjoy the “bodyguard of a whorehouse” in Machete Kills. The two first met when Vega was eleven and starred in Rodriguez’s family film Spy Kids.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter Vega talked about her new, risque role:
“The first time I walked out in my outfit on set, everyone was like, ‘Wow, you’re not allowed to wear that!’”
Most of the crew also worked on the Spy Kids films, so they were not used to seeing this new, grown up, Vega.
“I’ve never done anything like this,” she said. “I’d never felt comfortable enough, and I never thought this would be the project where I’d take a step forward.
“There is something about playing an edgier role. You just have to focus on what you’re making, and I want to test my boundaries.
“This was all about owning my sexuality. I worked really hard for it in a way that I never had to work hard for something before.”
Machete Kills hits theatres July 21, 2013.
