Guillermo del Toro can’t catch a break.
After having to ditch The Hobbit for financial and scheduling reasons, and then having his dream project At The Mountains Of Madness get scrapped, now he’s once again at the mercy of a strident studio.
Despite talking up a very anti-3D stance at Comic Con and elsewhere, del Toro is going to have to bite the bullet on his newest project — Warner Bros. is forcing him to post-convert Pacific Rim into 3D.
It’s a sure-fire business decision. Pacific Rim is tracking to be huge internationally, and the 3D upcharge is too juicy an opportunity to pass up.
Problem is: the director doesn’t want it, and he’s publicly said so. The movie is less than a year away, and with the studio bypassing del Toro’s creative vision for a financial foothold, there’s already a slight stink surrounding Pacific Rim.
Del Toro’s reason for preferring Pacific Rim not to be 3D is a good one — you lose the sense of monstrous scale you get with a 2D image.
My example is: if you saw Transformers 3 in 3D, remember the opening space battle sequence? Remember how those giant flying robots chasing and shooting each other looked in 3D?
They looked like little matchbox spaceship toys zipping around the screen. There was absolutely no sense of scale — everything looked way smaller than it should’ve and thus it looked fake and silly.
The giant monsters in Pacific Rim might end up looking like that, too.
