SNL Writer Jorma Taccone To Direct Action Comedy ‘Spy Guys’

Comedian and SNL writer Jorma Taccone just signed on to direct his follow up to MacGruber – Spy Guys, a comedy written by Adam Sztykiel (Due Date, Made of Honor).

Spy Guys is being described as “Ocean’s Eleven meets Mission: Impossible.” The movie will follow a CIA operative who gets framed and becomes an enemy of the state. He then has to tell all of his average Joe buddies about his true identity so that they can help him escape. But when they aid him, they all become wanted as accomplices and end up going on the run together.

Deadline is reporting that New Line bought the pitch and is bringing Taccone onboard as director. John Rickard will produce the project along with Taccone, Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer. This should come as no surprise since Taccone, Samberg and Schaffer are the guys that brought you the SNL Digital Short.

This is good news for Taccone. His last (and first) movie MacGruber tanked at the box office, and that’s not a good sign for a first-time director. But New Line must see some real potential in this project. We’re thinking that a lot of young, good looking actors will want to get in on this action. Don’t be surprised if Samberg gets a role.
