Mark Hamill Weighs In On Disney’s Deal With George Lucas And The Future Of ‘Star Wars’

The Disney/George Lucas deal surprised everyone, even Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies, didn’t know this was happening.

Entertainment Weekly got the chance to talk to Hamill, and questioned him about the big news.

Hamill told the site that he was shocked by the news and had learned about the deal like everyone else.

“I had no idea that George was going to sell to Disney until I read it online like everybody else. He did tell us last summer about wanting to go on and do [Episodes] VII, VIII, and IX, and that [newly appointed Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy would be doing them. He seems to be in a really good place. He’s really happy. And that’s nice because I know that when we were making the movies, he was not a jolly guy on set. [Laughs] I always felt badly for him because he agonizes over details, and I’m sure after imagining it in his head for so many years, to see it realized — he’d look up and just hang his head and groan. Harrison [Ford], Carrie [Fisher], and I were always trying to cheer him up and joke him out of his doom and gloom. I missed his call yesterday, but I spoke to him maybe three weeks ago. But until we know more, it’s hard to make any comment other than congratulations to George.”

The actor said that when Lucas invited him and Carrie Fisher to have lunch with him, he didn’t expect Lucas to say that they were going to make Episodes VII, VIII and IX.

“I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the Star Wars TV series that I’ve heard about — which I don’t think we were going to be involved in anyway, because that takes place between the prequels and the ones we were in and, if Luke were in them, he’d be anywhere from a toddler to a teenager so they’d get an age-appropriate actor — or the 3-D releases. So when he said, “We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” I was just gobsmacked. “What? Are you nuts?!” [Laughs] I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be — and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it. I guess that defines what cult movies are all about. We’ll see. I’m anxious to know what’s going on, but the main story [yesterday] was the sale to Disney. I have mixed feelings about that, but they haven’t done badly by Marvel and the Muppets and Pixar. It’s one of those big decisions that at first seems unusual but then the more you look at it, the more it makes sense.”

Hamill currently does voice over work on various shows, and co-stars in Sushi Girl.

Awesome! So GL was planning to make Episodes 7 to 9 last Summer! Miracle that stayed secret till now.

I hope Mark Hamil reprises his role as Luke, as an Obi Wan type, (with a Ghost Yoda puppet to assist)

The Clone Wars actors would be great as the Solo/skywalker kids. Though Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam screen tested for Anakin, he would be great as Lukes Son. Though the voice actor clone wars Anakin is great at playing Anakin, more than Hayden Christensen. Also, Nathan Fillion has the SOLO jnr looks. He got that Han Solo quality about him.

Hoping to see puppets, models, Hoth quality battles without too much CGI. Wonder if we’ll see a Palpatine ghost? I heard the Thrawn trilogy of book was the best sequel books to ROTJ, from what I’ve heard that sounds brilliant.

Also, hope the JEDI stuff is saved as a rare treat, like the OT, rather than having lightsabers in every frame of the movie like the prequels.

I guess the personal trainers for Mark, Carrie, and Harrison might be getting calls real soon. :-)

the timothy zahn thrawn trilogy is indeed the best book form sequel, with kevin j. anderson’s jedi academy trilogy in close second. for my money anyway. haven’t read them since junior high and highschool, so a lot of details are fuzzy. i remember the batshit crazy jedi joruus c’baoth from the zahn books though, and mara jade and talon karrde’s smuggler cartel. it’s actually the best thing ‘star wars’ since star wars ot i think. it would be a crazy dream come true for those books to be adapted to film, but for some reason i don’t think it’s likely. guess i’m just a pessimist.

no, they are too old, ‘too old to begin the training’. like i’ve said, if it were me i’d recast, but i do get it. great things are hard to let go of. even dashing smugglers and buxom jedi princesses must yield to the influence of time, and i could get over it.

original as in george lucas’ original outline or a creative team’s original pitch? at the end of the day, i’m just thrilled that this is happening one way or another. and what fool killed chewie?? i know it wasn’t timothy zahn or kevin anderson.

Yeaaaaah… no. You have no clue. Obviously you don’t work in the fitness industry.

It’s a forgone conclusion “according to the insiders” that Mark Hamill will be Luke in the next trilogy. I couldn’t be happier. All he needs to do is hit the gym and he’s golden.

the way you constantly insult people for what they think is stupid. you need to get a grip.

Mark Hammil is at the right age to play an elderly Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. With the right director (Steven Spielberg please!), and good writer….it could work!
