‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′: Marc Webb Addresses Jamie Foxx Casting Rumors

Marc Webb has yet to confirm whether Jamie Foxx will play Electro in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man sequel. During a press conference yesterday, Webb took some time to address the casting rumor and praised Foxx for being a ‘brilliant guy.’

Webb was at a press event, promoting The Amazing Spider-Man DVD and Blu-ray release when he was asked if Mr. Foxx would appear in the superhero sequel. Webb said:

“I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying! I think [he's] one of the best actors around today. He’s such a great character actor and he’s a really brilliant guy. I would love to work with him and you’ll be hearing more on that shortly, I’m sure.”

Even though this isn’t a confirmation, it sounds like Mr. Foxx will (most likely) be our next Spider-Man villain. Webb was also asked about what other Spider-Man characters he was particularly fond of.

“I like Electro. I’m fascinated by Norman Osborn and the different inflections of him. And Harry. Mary Jane and Gwen are always interesting to me.”

But no matter what villain ends up fighting Spider-Man in the sequel, Webb said that what’s most important is Peter Parker’s response to these villains.

“What makes villains interesting to me is what they bring out in Peter. What challenges they provide for him. What’s great about Marvel and other comics is that often there’s a pre-existing relationship… It’s not just about physical conflict he has, but the emotional ones as well.”

Webb is excited to move on and take Spider-Man to new places.

“What’s exciting about moving forward is that, in the first movie, I had to still honor some of the important elements of the origin story. But I also wanted to redefine the contact of it because I’m building a different universe than what we’ve seen before. A lot of nuance is quite different. Not, as we’re approaching the sequel, it’s really exciting because I feel quite liberated. I have a universe that’s my own. I don’t have an obligation to the origin story. It’s pretty fun and exciting and I can dig deeper into the parents.”

That’s great to hear. Frankly, seeing Uncle Ben get shot again wasn’t something we were looking forward to in The Amazing Spider-Man. How many times must we see that?

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone reprise their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy, and Shailene Woodley was recently confirmed for the role of Mary Jane Watson. The sequel hits screens in 2014.

The Amazing Spider-Man DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D hits stores November 9, 2012.

Of all the villains, Electro? Really? Ugh.

I’d rather see Ian McShane as Kraven the Hunter, or Antonio Banderas as Tarantula.
