It looks like “The Last Exorcism” was only the first and part two is coming around the corner.

CBS Films has bought the distribution rights to the sequel and is planning to release it March 1, 2013. Though CBS has ventured into the film industry before, this new venture has only recently begun; its first feature was released in 2010. The company has been anything but a sure-fire success with the only certifiable hit it has created being the supernatural horror “The Woman in Black.” It seems that CBS will try to go back to the well of genre scares in order to keep the business afloat.

“The Last Exorcism” combined the traditional trope of satanic possession with the new age “found footage” delivery. Though made for $1.8 million, it went on to gross $68 million worldwide, being distributed by a different company: Lionsgate Films.

Harold van Lier, who negotiated with CBS Films on behalf of Studiocanal, says:

“We knew that the creative team behind “The Last Exorcism Part II” had delivered a bigger, scarier sequel.”

Van Lier hopes that the partnership between the two organizations can be profitable and believes that CBS will deliver.

The second film will begin where the last left off. The possessed Nell Sweetzer, played by Ashley Bell, is found alone in the wilderness. As she tries to recuperate from her ordeal with a fresh, clean start, the demon that has been plaguing her makes a return for her immortal soul.

Seeing that horror thrillers have become quite bankable for the low amount produced versus the high gross they receive, one can expect that “The Last Exorcism: Part II” will not buck the trend.
