Whether or not Benedict Cumberbatch’s new villain is connected to a more notorious Star Trek threat is still up for grabs. Maybe the terrorist John Harrison is ready for a great reimaging.

Cumberbatch’s Harrison will seemingly cause internal strife between Captain Kirk and his crew.

Cumberbatch says:

“He is fed into the crew of the Enterprise and creates a lot of shadow play between Kirk and Spock.”

He goes on to describe his character’s perspective and travails:

“He is an awesome single-handed weapon of mass destruction but also a master mind-player and manipulator who plays with their roles and loyalties and understanding of what’s right and wrong. As far as his own purpose, beyond the terrorist means, he has a noble cause, which will hopefully resonate with the audience.”

The name of John Harrison has appeared within the Trek universe as a victim of the villainous Khan in the forbearer episode of the original “Star Trek: Wrath of Khan” sequel.

In comparison with Eric Bana’s antagonist character in the previous movie, who some suggest was not menacing enough, Cumberbatch says,

“It’s a compliment to me, not a disservice to Eric Bana…”

Referring to the Trek crew, he continues:

“All the crew understand each other, but at the same time you have to up the stakes with their peril, which means bringing in a stronger antagonist. It’s one of hugest compliments [J.J. Abrams] wanting to work with me, knowing how big this villain is.”

If this newest installment does feature Khan, it seems the movie will not be boldly going where no Trek movie has gone before. “Star Trek Into Darkness” will be released May 2013.

  • Seriously

Jeez stop with Khan already. Fuck Khan and his bullshit. New movies series, new villains. Tired of people wanting the same shit over and over. Superman has that same problem. Its going to be 2013 and in the 35 years since the original fuckin movie we still have the exact same villains we’ve had since then. Like c’mon. It’s like if the only Batman villains you got to see for 40 years was Hugo Strange and random thugs.
