Peter Jackson made a return to Middle Earth this weekend with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and it appears a lot of fans followed. The Hobbit started it’s theatrical run with $84.7 million, which breaks the December box office record previously held by I am Legend. Internationally The Hobbit has amassed $138.2 million, for a worldwide total of $222.9.

Coming in at number two is Rise of the Guardians with a 28.7% drop to $7.4 million bringing it’s domestic total to $71.3 million. Rise has been having a slow run at the box office, but it seems to be inching toward $100 million. With Christmas next week and children out of school there’s a fair chance it just might get there.

Lincoln took the number three spot with $7.2 million for a decline of 18.8% from last week. It’s now at $107.8 million, making it the first Daniel Day-Lewis flick to cross the century mark.

James Bond had to settle for fourth place with a 35.1% drop and $7 million. Skyfall is now at $272.3 million domestic and $951 worldwide. This could be the first bond film to cross $1 billion.

Life of Pi came it at number five this weekend with $5.4 million for a 35.2% drop from last week. It’s domestic total is now $69.5 million.
