‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer Is Finally HERE!!

Warner Bros. Pictures has finally released the trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming robots-versus-kaiju epic film “Pacific Rim.” In addition they have also released a new photo of a Jaeger.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day.

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.” When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Check out the kick ass trailer and photo below and let us know what you think.

“Pacific Rim” will hit theaters on July 12, 2013.

UPDATE: Here is the new poster from the film.

OK, kids, I’m gonna be ‘that guy.’

I’m seriously hoping these shots are the footage the ad execs think will sell this idea, and not representative of the entire film. Dark, rainy, wet, dark, frenetic, blurry, dark, over-detailed, dark CGI vomit, in the rainy, wet dark.

Really, Del Toro? This is your love letter to Kaiju and Mecha anime? Computer animated, Clash of the Titan-looking monsters? Dark, muddy shots in extreme close-up? Super-insane-hyper-detailed bots with no human expressions and no personality? Isn’t the point of mecha anime that the mechs are extensions of the pilots’ personalities, bonding with their fighting spirit and becoming heroic entities themselves? Where, exactly, am I supposed to look on these messy Bayformers to see that? Don’t these CG artists (or the filmmakers that hire them) know that the human eye can only take in so much information before it just gives up and glazes over, waiting for the footage to end?

I feel crushed after this trailer. I’ve been rooting for this project since I first heard of it. This is not what my heart yearned for. This is not what was promised. This is not man-in-suit monsters vs. anime mecha in live action. This is a blurry, dark, rainy over-detailed mess with no personality, no heart, no wonder, no weight, no beauty, no fun, no point. I am saddened.

portals to another dimension…invading aliens…advanced robotic technology…and nobody’s a bit suspicious to hear GlaDos? I believe we’ve found out why Half-Life 2.3 is taking so long to finish.

Having grown up on Ultraman, Giant Robot and Gigantor, this brings much gladness to my aging heart. Love that the designs of the Kaiju are also reminiscent of the Kaiju of old.

  • Jesus_Slade

WOW man! Maybe you over analised it a bit much?
It’s a preview, not the movie.
Plenty of time for the producers to sort it out.
GI Joe set the standard for fixing up shit!
    Bay isn’t involved! Have faith!

Evidently you want a robot chicken version of this movie! Did you expect a guy in a latex suit fighting even more latex worn monsters on strings??? Are you freaking kidding me? For you to even question his vision of monsters, leads me to believe you never watched one of his movies! STFU and educate yourself on this Pioneer’s work of the visual effect world.

Hell yes! Reminds me of Big O

No worries, friend. I’ve been a fan and champion of his work for years. Love both Hellboy films, adore Pan’s Labyrinth, was stoked for Mountains and his vision for The Hobbit. That’s why I feel so let down. Japanese sci-fi and fantasy is holy ground to me. I fully trusted Del Toro to understand what makes Kaiju film and mecha anime unique. This footage felt so Westernized, so dissimilar to the man’s work. I WANTED to see more of Del Toro’s stamp on it.

I’ve watched it more than once, trying to see what is exciting others, but it looks like the same dark, murky, frenetic, over-detailed mess we’ve become accustomed to in the past decade. Most of all, it just feels hollow. To me, I mean. But hey, if you love it I’m happy for you. And… a little envious.

LOL, you’re probably right man. Over analyzed is right. But that’s me… never gonna change. True, no Bay on this job. I’ll try and buck up and soldier on. :) Maybe the next trailer will be just what I was hoping for.
