Kathleen Kennedy Hopes To “Hold Onto The Spirit” Of The Original ‘Star Wars’

StarWarsAwesome

We have Part 5 (the last entry) in the ongoing video interview series between mega-producer Kathleen Kennedy and retiree George Lucas as Lucasfilm officially becomes part of the Disney family.

They discuss the passing of the creative baton, the beginning of Lucas’ new (non Star Wars related) phase in life, and Kennedy’s hopes for the revamped company.

Before watching the video, here are some choice quotes:

Kennedy says,

“There are things that I want to preserve in the spirit of this company as it moves into Disney. I think it’s vitally important to anything we create that we hold onto the spirit of what started all of this.”

Lucas says,

“Obviously retirement is filled with a lot of sadness, and at the same time, filled with a lot of excitement and exhilaration.”

After the prequels, I jettisoned every bit of love I had for Star Wars. All respect to Lucas and his contributions to scifi and cinema in general (which are many) but each new entry into the prequel trilogy was a level of terrible equal and opposite of the greatness of each entry in the original trilogy. Although the hoky parts of ROTJ and the awesome parts of Episode 3 bring those particular movies to an almost equal footing (almost, I said). Anyhow, for whatever reason this news has renewed my Star Wars love almost from the moment I heard it. I really think we’re gonna get good stuff here.

The prequel trilogy story arc is actually quite compelling. Lucas did a fine job of translating a complex arc into a trilogy for the mainstream market. The way the Emperor used the Senate to form the Empire is almost Shakespearean. Bravo to Lucas for telling a story that stands out and is not a dumbed down cliche.

I agree! The prequels are horrible in many ways, bad characters, cgi etc.. but it is compelling storylines. If someone else made the films in the OT style rather than putting looneytunes characters into every film it would have been incredible. Its just a shame it as it sounds good on paper, but the style is as different as Star Wars and star Trek.

However, the Clone Wars cartoon is soooo much better than the prequels. It has its faults too and started off a bit bumpy but it is a great show. see this 100 episodes trailer link below to see how much work has gone into this tv show if you’ve never seen it….

I seriously cannot wait for whats to come now Disney owns it. I look forward to seeing The Empire return and hope its as serious in tone as the OT rather than kid friendly fun.

I agree. It is amazing that the two greatest star wars flicks (Empire,Jedi) were not directed by Lucas. It gives me some hope that a new director will be the cure. But my love for star wars has definitely faded as the prequels were released. I am 37 years old….maybe it is a generational thing, but the original films are the only ones I truly recognize as canon.

The issue with the three films was it wasn’t sure if it wanted to tell a complex story of the rise of the Empire or if it wanted to be a Saturday morning movie type serial that kids would love. Too much thrown in to one series which many people had their vision of what they expected.
