OUTSTANDING Sci-Fi Short Film R’ha By Kaleb Lechowski

aMatterOfDays_870x300

So going through my inbox, I got this email from a reader alerting me to 22 year old visual effects prodigy out of Germany named Kaleb Lechowski.

Kaleb is currently studying animation and digital film design at Mediadesign Hochschule in Germany. During the first year of his studies, Kaleb made his first short film R’ha. The short film was a solo project and quite the herculean effort. It took seven months to execute. All computer animation and design was created by Kaleb. He used used Blender a lot for modeling, then sculpted in zBrush, animated and rendered in Maya with Mental Ray with compositing in Nuke and After Effects.

What is the short about? A member of an alien race is being interrogated and tortured by a machine. Written, directed, animated by Kaleb Lechowski, sound by Hartmut Zeller, and voice acting by David Masterson.

For a first time effort, the short and execution is OUTSTANDING. The animation, the shot selection, the composition, HOTNESS!

How hot? Manager Scott Glassgold from IAM Entertainment signed Kaleb just off the trailer!

You can watch the complete short below. Check it out and tell us what you think!

Looks to me like a winner!

For more on R’ha, check the film’s Facebook page.

Outstanding creature life form. Hero is better than story. Story is a good setup. A talent to watch and support for sure.

That was outstandingly done. I like the design for the main character, could use a tiny bit of refinement, but with a budget, that could be a brilliant story!

  • Jesus_Slade

    Nice work!!
Intregued as to where this could go!
    Give this guy $200 million
and slap Bay in the face!!

Seems like he was heavily influenced by Halo. Creature looks like a 4 armed snake-like version of an elite or Sangeilhi.

Thats a pretty decent work, i cannot wait to see more of his work!!!

    Damn that’s impressive!!

Is anyone else thinking what I’m thinking?

If Neil Blomkamp doesn’t want to do the sequel to District 9, give it to this kid, (With an experienced 2nd Unit director) and watch him fly.
After all, that’s how Blomkamp himself got his start and door opened for District 9 – when he did a Youtube short for Halo.

Josh Trank is another name that comes to mind of a young kid given a chance on a relatively modestly budgeted sci-fi-type movie and delivering the goods.
Everybody always says that Hollywood has run out of original ideas, but then you have guys doing stuff like this on their own.

  • David

There’s your design for the Protoss right there

  • Paul

    Great!! Wow… Just Great!
I would have guessed the ships were models the way the shook with turbulence.
Would be cool to see a full fledged film!

  • Irish

It’s crazy to think that this near one man job looks better than (for example) a film like Van Helsing that had a budget of $160 million. Loved it.
The story was Terminator in space though.

    That was the balls!

  • beane2099

Yeah, I’m impressed. It’s pretty righteous. If this got made into a movie, though, the Hollywood types would want humans in there somehow.
