Stephanie Meyer has become one of the most popular contemporary writers, following in the successes of Stephen King and J.K. Rowling. When Harry Potter’s adventures had run its course, it was her “Twilight” series that dominated young adult literature which was tinged with fantasy. She is not only a hot commodity for the literary field, but also the cinematic.
Saoirse Ronan, who has acted in “Hanna” and “Atonement,” will play Melanie in “The Host.” The movie is based on Meyer’s book of the same name. She says of the character, “Melanie is tough and feisty.” She also discusses her personal involvement in the behind-the-scenes effects for the movie: “I like doing my own stunts because it’s always going to look more realistic.”
This new film is written and directed by Andrew Niccol whose best works are “The Truman Show” which earned him an Oscar nomination, and the Nic Cage-led “Lord of War.” Just like the “Twilight” series, the movie will be a jumping board for new actors; the cast predominated by fresh faces. Two notable acting veterans, though, will be William Hurt and Diane Kruger.
“The Host” seems to be thematically within the domain of Science-Fiction, but there is still a trademark of Meyer’s spiritualism. The summary goes like this: Humanity is becoming extinct due to alien invaders. Melanie Stryder, the protagonist, has a parasitic alien soul fused with her body, but eventually both work together to save Humanity.
“The Host” will be released March of this year and for more on the look and feel of the film check the clip below.
