Deadline is reporting that director James Gunn and Marvel have found their Star-Lord. Chris Pratt has landed the role of Peter Quill, or Star-Lord as he comes to be known.
Here’s a little on Quill/Star-Lord from Marvel, just in case you need a refresher:
Peter Quill is born during an unusual astronomical phenomenon when many of the planets align. Seeing no resemblance, the man who believed he was Quill’s father angrily accused his wife Meredith of infidelity and attempts to kill the infant, but dies of a sudden heart attack. Quill is raised by his single mother.
One day Peter returned home, bruised from trying to stop a bully. As he is washing up for dinner, his mother sees a bright light and two aliens emerge. Vowing to end the ‘Spartoi bloodline’, they kill Meredith. After Quill sees the aliens and his dead mother, he panics and runs. As the aliens pursue, he grabs a shotgun and manages to kill them with it. He then finds a mysterious device in a closet. Seeing a bright light he flees the house, just before the alien ship destroys it.
Quill is placed in an orphanage but escapes and eventually becomes a trainee NASA astronaut. An alien entity called the Master of the Sun eventually visits the space station that Quill and other astronauts are currently inhabiting, and offers the mantle of Star Lord (an interplanetary policeman) to a worthy candidate, Quill volunteers, but is rejected in favour of a colleague he once treated badly.
Quill is outraged, and NASA orders his return to Earth and discharge for his conduct. Peter, however, steals a scoutship, and on returning to the space station takes his colleague’s place. Quill is then chosen to become Star-Lord, with the Master of the Sun first creating an illusion in which he is able to find and kill the aliens that murdered his mother to free him of his past. Equipped with a sentient vessel called “Ship”, Quill commences his role as Star-Lord.
If you watch Parks and Recreation, then you may be wondering why Gunn cast a slightly pudgy dude for the lead in his superhero flick; but if you’ve seen Zero Dark Thirty, then you know Pratt lost the baby fat an bulked up quite a bit.
Now that the lead is cast, and considering the movie is set for release in about a year and a half, expect more the rest of the cast to fill out sooner rather than later.
