Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso Talks Latino Superheroes

I had no idea the Young Avengers had a Latina superhero in the group named Miss America Chavez. Check her out.

2702681-america_chavez_miss_america_012But what is even more cool is the interview Fox News Latino’s Victor Garcia conducted with Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso to talk about the increased visibility of Latino characters in the comics he produces i.e. Miss America Chavez in Young Avengers and Miles Morales in Ultimate-Spider-Man.

Most of you by now my real name isn’t Hector Ayala. For professional purposes and as an inside joke to my fanboy colleagues, I used that name because back in the day, Hector Ayala used to be the name of Marvel’s only Latino character at the time – THE WHITE TIGER! When a Latino Superhero dies in comics, he stays dead. I’m STILL waiting for Marvel to resurrect Hector Ayala somehow.

    If you haven’t picked up a copy of Young Avengers, I highly recommend it. Great cast, great art, great writing.

    It’s 2013, Axel Alonso is the HMFIC at Marvel, yet they still make the mistake of defining a minority superhero by her assigning her an ethnic name.

    With that outfit, why not just call her the Butta Rican and call it a day?
