Universal’s future is looking very bright. The studio has announced sequels to Mama and Identity Thief, and in a recent interview with THR, chairman Adam Fogelson dished on more upcoming projects.
First and foremost, the rumor that Angelina Jolie was “in talks” to direct the Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation was totally untrue. Fogelson said that the studio is working with the prolific actress/director but on a different project (called Unbroken). He also said that Fifty Shades is “an absolute priority” for Universal. He hopes to have it ready by next summer.
Fogelson also talked about the Bourne franchise. There’s more coming, and possibly with Matt Damon.
“I absolutely see us doing more Bourne, 100 percent yes. Matt has talked about the possibility of coming back, and we totally respect that and are excited if and when he wants to have conversations. But I think the last movie gave us a big bunch of options to pursue a next chapter.”
In regards to Snow White and the Huntsman (a surprise hit for Universal in 2012), Fogelson said that Rupert Sanders doesn’t plan to helm the sequel. The story, however, will definitely focus on Kristen Stewart’s character as well as Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman.
“We’re actively developing the movie right now with Kristen’s character central, as well as the Huntsman role. We think that for a first movie out of the gate to do basically $400 million worldwide, there is a lot of opportunity. I don’t think Rupert is pursuing the next Snow White as a directing opportunity.”
This year, Universal will release a 3D version of the original Jurassic Park, Tom Cruise’s sci-fi pic Oblivion, another Fast and Furious movie, Despicable Me 2, the comic book flick Kick-Ass 2 and many more.
