Coming Soon spoke with Joseph Gordon-Levitt at SXSW about his directorial effort, Don Jon (his first feature film) which is showing there after receiving accolades at Sundance.
Then, he was asked about his role in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, which is a sequel to 2005′s Sin City, a satisfyingly violent neo-noir film. Both films are based on a series of comics written by co-director Frank Miller.
“It’s interesting. They wanted to have a movie where fans of the books would still be able to look forward to something new and unexpected, so they added a story. I remember being really intrigued by that and I was really looking forward to, ‘Oh that will be so interesting to have the actual comics to refer to as an actor’ but no I didn’t.”
In the upcoming Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller directed film, Gordon-Levitt plays a character named “Johnny” as part of a sequence called “The Long Bad Night”. This sequence is not from the comics but it’s likely that co-director Frank Miller, also the comic books’ creator, helped to write this sequence for the film.
Gordon-Levitt also said that his character Johnny crosses paths with other characters in the “Sin City” Universe:
“I saw Bruce and Mickey (Rourke) and I have a scene together, and Jessica (Alba). I was so stoked.”
The film also stars: Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Stacy Keach, Christopher Meloni, Dennis Haysbert, Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Jeremy Piven and Jamie Chung.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is being shot in 3D and is set to be released October 4th, 2013.
