Co-Creator of “Ninja Turtles” Comic Refutes Criticism About Bay’s New Film Adaptation

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, co-creator of the “Ninja Turtles” comics, Kevin Eastman talked about the upcoming “Ninja Turtles” film.

The film is being produced by Michael Bay and supposedly stars Megan Fox as the main human character: April O’Neil. Jonathan Liebsman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles) is directing.

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic was printed in 1984 in B & W. The original origin story was that these pet turtles morphed into mutants after being exposed to toxic waste in the sewers of New York City.

In popular culture, many recognize these Turtles for their love of pizza…with no anchovies.

“No anchovies and I mean no anchovies. You put anchovies on this thing and you’re in big trouble ok?!” -Michelangelo

A lot of people were infuriated when producer Bay changed the origin story of the Turtles to make them more “believable”. They are aliens now.

In the interview, Eastman countered the negativity surrounded the film:

“…it’s probably amusing to a lot of people what the press puts out there and what they say people behind the scenes really want to do with the movie, but [Platinum Dunes'] main goal is actually to make the best possible ‘Turtles’ movie with respect to the fans and the core audience as possible.

We’ve learned from movies like ‘The Avengers,’ which to me was a superhero movie so good to me personally that I practically wept. It was perfect, you know what I mean? That’s the stuff that I grew up on. Joss Whedon just knocked it out of the park, the whole team did, and that includes choreographing all the interlocking movies.

From everything that I’ve seen in the ['TMNT'] script and the development and everything they’ve asked my input on specifically, it’s gonna be an awesome, familiar, solid ‘Turtles’ movie. It’ll have everything that fans are gonna want and then some.”

Is Eastman to be believed? Or is this just good public relations?

Synopsis:

Aliens invade Earth and inadvertently spawn a quartet of mutated reptile warriors, the Ninja Turtles, who rise up against them to defend the world.

Release date is set for: June 6, 2014.

Are the aliens lead by the Shredder and called the Foot?
Do the Turtles learn Fung Fu from an intelligent rat?
That plot summary is not TMNT…

if the mutagen is from the aliens like krang and that tranforms turtles into who we know then can get with that but if its the turtles are aliens and then revolt against the aliens they came with then booooo

To my knowledge, the Ooze has always been “Alien” in origin, and I’d love to see Krang and the technodrome in a movies, i also hope to see Bebop & Rocksteady too and Shredder and the foot.

As long as the Turtles remain the turtles we know and love, and splinter is splinter, then I am ecstatic about this movie. The new animated series has absolutely nailed the Turtles visually and personality. Mikey bing the youngest and comic relief, i’m digging this new show. Its villain of the week mostly sucks though but there’s an interesting Krang and shredder main thread going on. And Splinters redesign from the classic Yoda type to a strict sensei took a few episodes to get used to but it works great now. Hopefully they take the good stuff from this show and put it into the movie.

And definitely needs to respect the 1990 movie too, thats a classic! Even the recent TMNT cgi film, they got the Turtles right, but that film had horrible unknown villains. Krang and Shredder should have been in that, may have been more popular a film.

    ps, its NO Anchovies!

I would prefer that it be closer to the source material as well but adaptations mean that they are “based on” source material. “Based on” doesn’t mean “duplicated from.”

Thank you! The Turtles HATE anchovies. Every Turtle fan knows that.

Absolutely! And a tiny detail like that goes to show how much is at stake by changing things/getting things we care about wrong. Anchovies can ruin a Pizza. An Alien race of Alien Turtles can ruin everything.

    Sorry Gentlemen.

The Ooze originally came from the same canister that blinded Matt Murdoch!

Sorry, but no. After what Bay did to Transformers I have zero faith that this will turn out well. NO doubt Eastman will only have good things to say, he’s probably going to make a nice % from the ticket sales.

I loved the original, non-CGI film adaptation.

I bet he got a nice check about a year ago for saying only good things about his “baby” from here out. Laird has different feelings: http://peterlairdstmntblog.blogspot.com/

Eastman has been accepting big, fat paycheques from Platinum Dunes for a while. No surprise here.
