The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is coming December 13, 2013.

Jackson fields a question from a particular celebrity fan and also gives a sneak peek at what Mirkwood (scroll to the very bottom) will look like.

The first question that he answers is regarding how he will turn this middle portion of the book into a film. This is a question that has come up in many Hobbit fan circles.

Jackson answers that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was a “fairly linear film” and that the upcoming The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug “starts splitting into multiple storylines” and that “we can follow different characters as the story intensifies and the stakes go up”.

Hopefully this means we will get an extended look at the character Beorn (played by Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt).
