Walt Disney Pictures has released the final trailer for Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter.

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

“The Lone Ranger” Opens July 3, 2013.

I really like the cast but it still feels a bit generic. Not that I mind generic Westerns but it’s going to have a hard time finding traction in a crowded summer.
Random Aside: Either Yahoo! Screen needs to get their tech together or studios really need to stop giving them trailers because it’s routinely the worst viewing experience on the web.

I am not sure I like Depp’s involvement and character in this… kinda looks like a Wild Wild West Debacle to me… some good imagery but clearly they are making it more about Tonto than about the Lone Ranger and that is a bit of a mistake, imo. I’d have rather seen a relative unknown in both main roles. After a while, Johnny Depp playing yet another eccentric over-the-top character just becomes boring and old.

Much as I absolutely love Disney as a theme park operator… I am not nearly as thrilled with their movies… they are never suitably adult or dark enough. The greatness that was the back portion of The Dark Knight Rises would never have happened under Disney. I hope they don’t screw up Star Wars as they did with The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe… some stories are just best left out of the hands of Disney. They are not great with the non-kiddie movies that need some gritty darkness amid the rest of what is going on.
