Who thought that a big budget blockbuster like an “Independence Day” sequel can’t afford its marquee star?

During a press interview for “White House Down,” director Roland Emmerich confirmed that Will Smith will not return to star in the sci-fi sequel.

The reason? He’s too expensive.

Here’s what Emmerich said:

“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much.”

Without going into specific details, some people are returning to the cast of the second movie. It is confirmed that Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will return.

He added, “We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film and the other half people are new.”

And this week, Emmerich also mentioned that there will be only on sequel movie for now. It was originally slated for two sequels as “ID Forever Part I” and “ID Forever Part II.”

He told Collider that two films were planned for the story arc, but the studio wanted to see how the sequel will do in theaters.

Can the movie survive without Will Smith saving the world again?

Him and Goldbloom were the only good things about the original. What the hell are they thinking?

No loss there. People go to see these movies for the action and effects. People over rate an actors worth. Smith wasn’t a star before ID4 so I’m pretty sure people weren’t flocking to see him.

I wonder if he tried to force his son into this movie too

  • BLITZKREG

He’s too darn expensive, that’s what they were thinking. Not to mention his oversize ego.

  • Redbull Werewolf

His son isn’t too expensive, get him, audiences love him and he’s practically the next will smiff

  • ShadowInc

    Amen.

Are you forgetting Vivica Fox during the stripping scene?

I beg to dif, huge loss. The bloom may be off the rose, but back in 96 Smith was still riding the fresh prince fame train and he was the biggest thing in the movie. People ate him up. It’s a loss now because he’s expected to be in it. It’s like doing T2 without Arnold. It doesn’t work. They could work out a deal if they really wanted to, but they are sensing like a lot of us, that smith’s star has faded. He had a good run, but it’s over. This film will make money, but I think it’s going to suffer due to the missing cast members whomever they are. I expect that everyone will be back for the 3rd film. Yes, 3rd film, too much greed in Hollywood.

I won’t go watch this without Will Smith in it sorry….

  • Gammera2

Nobody around the world knew who he was outside America. Still made megabucks around the world.

You can’t compare Smith in this to Arnold in T2. Arnold is iconic in that role and smith just plays a generic jive talking pilot in ID4. People saw ID4 for the action and effects.

I agree that people don’t go to movies to see the actors, at least not enough ticket buyers to make a difference to the bottom line… unless it is an iconic role.

I gotta admit, Spiner was awesome as Dr. Okun. Though with a budget so big, I don’t how they couldn’t get Will on board.

    *drools*

    I’m sorry, what?

Until the end of times, movies will always be about the story, plain and simple — ID wasn’t about Will Smith — Are you guys kidding, yourself — Te story around ID evolved around 4 stories — Sith had nothing to do with the success of that movie — It was the first time ever that a space ship hovered above the white house and destroyed it — Nothing like that was ever done before; So before anyone drood over Will Smith go back and watch the movie, and you will see 4 story lines. Will Smith was NOT did not carry that movie!
