LR reader ‘Santiago’ sent us a photo of Benicio Del Toro As Pablo Escobar in Andrea di Stefano’s “Paradise Lost.” The film also co-stars Josh Hutcherson, Carlos Bardem, Brady Corbet, Ana Girardot, and Claudia Traisac.

The film follows a young surfer Nick who thinks all his dreams have come true when he goes to visit his brother in Colombia. Against an idyllic backdrop of blue lagoons and white beaches he falls madly in love with a beautiful Colombian girl called Maria.

It all seems perfect until he meets her uncle, one Pablo Escobar.

Have a look at the photo below and let us know what you think.

In no way he looks like a Chicano Attorney name Dr Gonzo.

And the reason for making a movie about a killer drug lord is?

A Colombian actor wouldn’t have secured the funding. At least this way we get a movie.

    …um, maybe because he’s a fascinating anomaly?

Are you asking this question seriously? Are you worried that this film is somehow glamourising or atoning for his evil? Is that even a real argument?

I would have preferred they try. Tired of these films that take place in Colombia with no Colombian actors. That Colombian made mini-series about Escobar was excellent.

Fair enough, but do we know that they didn’t try?

At least they went with a Latino, and not, say, and Italian-American. That’s something.

Plus, cards on the table here, I’ve got a fucking man-crush on Benicio, ever since working on Wolfman. Dude’s a fucking rockstar.
