Christian Bale Auditions For ‘Batman Begins’ in Val Kilmer’s Batsuit

batman-featureSaw this one drop over the weekend while watching football and thought it was cool. Warner Home Entertainment will release Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray on Tuesday, September 24, but one of the special bonus features has already made its way online (via – Christian Bale’s audition in the Val Kilmer Batman suit opposite Man of Steel‘s Amy Adams. Check it out below.

I hear the 76 minute behind the scenes doc The Fire Rises: The Creation Of The Dark Knight Trilogy is hot. According to

In my opinion the new special features bonus disc is the most exciting piece of content that’s included. This 76 minute documentary is the “main event” and includes interviews with Christopher Nolan, Guillermo Del Toro, Damon Lindelof, Michael Mann, Richard Roeper, Zack Snyder and many other Warner Bros. executives and producers. It’s split up into several chapters and there’s tons of behind-the-scenes footage.

But that is not all. The folks over at CBM scored themselves two stills of Cillian Murphy who also donned the cape and cowl to audition. Check em out.

The synopsis for the Blur ray is as follows:

Batman Begins: Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city. The Dark Knight: The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. The Dark Knight Rises: It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Back when his voice was still tolerable. Nolan never should’ve messed with it after Begins.

  • bfmrdk

God I wish they had kept his voice from Batman Begins for the trilogy, it sounded more like this audition. It wasn’t so over the top. By Rises it was SO distracting.

  • jamthemaj

Cool video! Bale will always be Batman to me, but I do think that Affleck will be great, as well. Still, I will miss Bale.

On another note, if Adams hadn’t been cast as Lois, I wish she would’ve been Rachel instead of Holmes. I loved her as Lois though, so I’m glad she wasn’t in the end.

  • Chris

Oh yeah? His voice just got worse and worse throughout the trilogy? Gimme a break. It was consistent through all of the films. Sure, it got a little comical when he yelled, but that’s part of the charm and he did it in all three movies.

  • hallela23

Rises was pure shit, so crap voice goes well with it.

  • Hephaestus1

His voice actually was different from TDK on. That’s not debatable, it’s proven fact.

“‘”The Dark Knight’ hauled in $43.8 million to rank as Hollywood’s top movie for the third straight weekend, fending off ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,’ which opened a close second with $42.5 million. It has earned $394.9 million in just 17 days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Though much of the voice effect is Bale’s own doing, under the guidance of director Christopher Nolan and supervising sound editor Richard King, the frequency of his Batman voice was modulated to exaggerate the effect

  • John Smith from back East

I’m sure they did this same process with Affleck and he must’ve nailed it….

  • Dan Riedel

    ^ True story.

I wish they kept Bale’s original interpretation from the audition.

  • Dan Riedel

    Yea, I agree.

I like the more down to earth rendition of Lois. She’s a chick I’d want to get with :)

  • Dan Riedel

Nope, according to his interview with Fallon, the WB called him up and offered him the role. Without an audition!

    Nepotism at its best.

  • Dan Riedel

The fact Cillian Murphy could’ve been Batman is hillarious. He’s too scrawny.

It’s even funnier Nolan kept him for the trilogy. He made the perfect Scarecrow for me… not too creepy, kinda handsome…but disturbed.

  • Kill Bomb

I am so tired of hearing about superheros… God.. move on.

  • Hephaestus1

That would’ve silenced a lot of criticisms, I’m sure.

  • jamthemaj

    I hear that! :D

Much better Bat voice! Its closer to Michael Keatons Bat voice. Maybe thats why they changed it though, to be different. ?

Also why has no one pointed out this… Where were all these damn extras when we purchased the blurays/dvds??????

  • Onyx

    Yeah,no kiddin’.Now I feel ripped off! Lol

  • Dan Riedel

Totally! They should re-release the Trilogy with an over dub by Conroy :p

  • Onyx

Agreed. He was a good Scarecrow.
