DC’s Game-Changing ‘Batman vs Superman’ Plan, & Casting Notes

Casting Couch

It’s been a busy start of the year for the big leather couch in Batman vs Superman‘s casting office. So let’s take a look at a few of the names that have sprung up, and give you the latest chatter surrounding DC’s plans:

Dwayne Johnson

A trusted source says that the unnamed DC film that Dwayne Johnson will be working on in 2014 will, indeed, be a Justice League movie. That’s not all, though, because this has folks wondering how the JL movie can be underway in 2014, when WB/DC are in full-swing production of BvS. Well, the current thought amongst some insiders is that Batman vs Superman and Justice League are going to be shot back-to-back, ala The Hobbit films, the Pirates of The Caribbean sequels, and the latter two Matrix flicks.

Why?

  • To maximize everyone’s schedules. Ben Affleck is a busy man, Henry Cavill is in-demand, and Johnson is a workaholic. Not to mention Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and the rest of the unannounced cast are no slouches either.
  • Because Batman vs Superman is going to end with an insane cliffhanger/teaser that leads right into Justice League and, like those other back-to-back productions, they want to be able to deliver the second film within a year to strike while the iron is hot. Could this very aggressive approach be how DC intends to pull the rug right out from under rival Marvel Studios? Sure could be.

This would also explain the abundance of characters we keep hearing linked to BvS, and should also soothe the fears of folks that think it’s going to be too loaded a film. In essence, all this talk of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Flash, Green Lantern, etc might all just be leading to a single gigantic group cameo before the credits roll, starting a fever pitch of anticipation for Justice League in 2016.

As usual, take this with a grain of salt. It’s an idea that’s been formulated using a combination of insider information and good old fashioned speculation from folks who’ve been in the game a long, long time. Not to mention, the logic seems to pan out.

jason-drax

Jason Momoa, who was once up for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy (a part that ultimately went to former WWE Superstar, Dave Bautista) has finally addressed the rumors surrounding his involvement with Batman vs Superman.

“It’s just rumors. I want to say something amazing, but I can’t comment on rumors. It’s flattering. I’m not involved in it.”

Momoa made the revelation in a chat with IGN. So much for those rumors that he was up for Doomsday- who many folks seem to believe will be one of two villains in BvS.

josh-holloway

Fans who’ve been clamoring for Lost‘s Josh Holloway to dive into a big comic book property may be as close as ever to getting their wish. Too bad it looks very unlikely. CBM is reporting that a trusted source of their’s has informed them Holloway is being considered for a role in Batman vs Superman. I, and many others, would say that the 44 year old actor would be a lock to play the King of The Seven Seas, Aquaman.

However, logic- and our own El Mayimbe- are quick to point out that the man’s schedule is likely to rule him out. Holloway just headlined the most-watched TV premiere of the season with his CBS series, Intelligence. While it’s perfectly possible that he read for BvS before Intelligence hit the air, the fact that the series could be a huge hit and turn into a longterm commitment for him could ultimately remove him DC’s plans.

It wouldn’t be the first time a TV commitment limited an actor’s ability to leap to the silver screen. Famous examples from the past include Tom Selleck, who would’ve been Indiana Jones if not for Magnum P.I., and Pierce Brosnan who would’ve become James Bond over a decade sooner if he weren’t all ready doing Remington Steele.

And there you have it. That’s the latest scuttlebutt coming out of Batman vs Superman. As always, there’s no official word on any of this (except for Mamoa’s blunt denial) but I wouldn’t be surprised to see DC/WB come out with confirmations/denials in the near future as all-eyes are going to be on them in the months to come as production for BvS ramps up.

  • Xmasevebaby

So are they looking at The Rock to portray Darkseid? Because I could see Mamoa as Solomon Grundy if they go that route.

  • Pingback: 'Batman vs. Superman' and 'Justice League' to film back-to-back? - Batman News

i’ve heard rumors that the Rock is going to be the John Stewart Gl

  • Hephaestus1

    Desperate, desperate, desperate.

But only if these rumors are true.

  • Dave

just confirmed what Cosmic Book News said. Sounds awesome!

  • Josh White

I don’t see desperate as much as I see genius. People seem to think if they don’t do everything the way Marvel did, it’s automatically wrong.

  • Josh White

I think Jason Momoa and the Rock were up for for similar or the same role they both look very exotic relative to ohio.

  • Brian Baker

Current leading rumor is John Stewart’s GL. He fits the look perfectly, and I don’t *think* the Rock has ever played a REAL villain, but I don’t know his full filmography.

  • lyleUS

Too bad none of these rumors will pan out. Just seems too much grasping at straws here. Would be cool, though.

  • eric

Holloway spoke on the “Preston and Steve Show” on 93.3 WMMR Fm in Philadelphia this morning saying his involvement with a BVS was just rumors.

  • Mr. J

looks like maybe WB is going with a “shock and awe” strategy… it could work actually.

  • The__Usual_Suspect

Feels a bit rushed though, no?

  • joe

genius? you must live a very stupid life

  • BLITZKREG

I love the rock, but I would love to see Idris Alba ( Thor ‘s Hemdill ) play John Stewart. Idris definitely has the look. Where as, The Rock is huge, and I could see him playing Darkseid or even Doomsday ( under heavy make up and cgi enhancements)

  • I_Am_Ben_Affleck

I don’t believe it. It’s too good to be true.

  • Vegas82

Rushed? You mean like 2 Marvel movies every year? They’re going to release movies at half that speed to start…

  • kapow!

nice article, Mr. Robles. this makes me remember what Goyer said way back in April 2013: “We are much further along than people think…”
keep in mind, didn’t MOS finish filming in 2011? that leaves a two-year gap before MOS was actually released. i doubt Goyer was twiddling his thumbs. seems like a lot of time to plan the DC Movieverse and write/polish several scripts. Not rushed or desperate at all.

  • Rob Ottone

Was a villain in Doom. Not too bad, either.

  • Rob Ottone

Common. Not Elba. Common all the way.

It has nothing to do with Marvel. It’s about the poor actors, reduced screentime for Supes, and moving right into a Justice League film afterwards.

Non compete clause. Idris Elba can’t work with DC. Same reason Jamie Alexander was ruled out as Wonder Woman.

  • October_1985

I really hope The Rock is out of this. I want real actors for my movies, no action heros. I dont want Justice League looking like another Fast and the Furious or GI JOE sequel. And its a terrible fit for John Stewart. John was an architecht, a normal guy, not a culturist. Anyone who says that Johnson is a good fit for Green Lantern obviously has no idea of what is he talking about.

  • October_1985

Is a terrible fit for GL. John Stewarts is an architect, a normal guy, no a former wrestler.

Avengers was five years in the making…JL is coming out after two. Is it really Marvel’s fault that they have more than two properties that fans and movie audiences care about?

  • Mario-Francisco Robles

Yes, which is why I used the term “game-changing” as opposed to “groundbreaking.” They’re not doing anything new here. However, in terms of CBMs, and- specifically- the DC vs Marvel rivalry, this bold approach would stand in clear contrast to Marvel and put an exclamation point on DC’s intentions. Up until now, DC has been sort of the “underdog” with an unclear strategy, that was trying to play catch-up with Marvel. If this projected approach works for DC it could really shift a lot of buzz, momentum, and attention towards them and make Marvel’s very cautious approach seem less appealing.

  • New-Insider

obviously this writer for LR is just rehashing old news. Aquaman is still being screen tested, with one of the latest in the running to be Liam McIntyre.

    Source:SAGAFTRA

  • Alex Mendoza

Yeah but he was in the military before that wasnt he?

  • October_1985

Yes, but I dont think that has been ever the main background of the character, at least I dont recall stories where that is played out. Anyway, being in the military doesn’t makes you a strongman. The question is that not all superheroes have to have a great physique and the looks of an action hero, that is generic and tired. Marvel is casting all kind of actors to great success, I think DC should try the same and steer clear of the action man cliché.

  • Musikonica

Don’t be so sure. Until Man Of Steel, DC/WB didn’t really know what they were doing.
Also, “why would they put out some bull crap and risk millions and potentially billions of dollars.(?)”. Before the Batman trilogy, this is pretty much what they were doing, perhaps not on such a large scale.

I’m hoping this all works alright. Your confidence is just strange to me… No offence.

  • Mattman

As much as I like The Rock, I personally think Denzel or Idris Elba would be a better fit for Green Lantern (that’s IF The Rock is actually playing GL).

  • Marcus D. Ellison

I could be wrong but I have a feeling that they may end up using Simon Baz as the GL in the JL movie and that’s who The Rock’s gonna play. He looks a lot more like Simon than he does John.

Not Denzel since he’s a bit too old (Training Day era though, he’d be amazing) but Idris for sure. He pretty much IS John Stewart.

  • wat

The Rock is actually a pretty good actor for a “physique actor.” But he would definitely be a terrible fit for John Stewart. That role should be Idris Elba’s.

    Except…you know…John Stewart is black.

That’s not true. Jaimie wasn’t ruled out because she’s with Marvel. WB didn’t want her, clearly. And there’s no rule that you can’t be in films by both studios. There’s plenty of actors who have been in movies by both. Ben Affleck being the most obvious example.

  • wat

What…? He’d be a terrible choice for John Stewart. Absolutely terrible. Idris Elba all the way.

  • wat

Common looks nothing like John Stewart… I love Common but that’s a terrible choice. Idris Elba all the way.

  • Convoy

This seems very rushed, but this is really all that they can do. If they go slow and take their time, they’ll be blamed for trying to be like Marvel. Also, they have to play catch up and Warner Bros. doesn’t have a good franchise under their belts right now. So they have to go hard.

  • Pingback: Un rumor sobre el plan “sorpresa” de Warner Bros con la Liga de la Justicia | SALONDELMAL

  • wat

The Rock should really play Cyborg. Just imagine how amazing the android prosthetics would look since the costume designers and editors will have SO much room to work with.

If he were playing the villain, he’d make a really good Darkseid.

  • wat

I don’t see a problem with it, personally. They could introduce other team members and then expand on them in solo movies afterward. Sorta like an opposite Marvel approach. Justice League characters are already pretty well known so unlike most of the Avengers, intro movies weren’t necessary.

  • Rob Ottone

You do realize all Marvel guys have no-compete clauses right? Your little poster is cute, but it’l never happen. Common was cast as Stewart back in the day. Give him the role again.

  • wat

There’s a whole long list of actors who have been in both movies. Also if Common was casted back in the day, that casting team made a terrible choice and I’m glad it didn’t happen.

  • Madcap2112

Non-Compete clause. Pretty much a rule that says Marvel actors can’t be in a DC movie without breaking their contracts.

And Ben Afflleck was in a Fox movie. Big difference.

  • blkyank

There can be a rule against being in films from a rival studio. That’s what people are talking about when they say “Non compete clause” Its up to the actor to decide if they want the role bad enough to sign such a clause.

Ben Affleck was never under contract to Marvel Studios,he was under contract to FOX who let all contracts expire before letting the Daredevil property revert to Marvel.

  • blkyank

If the Justice League double header works, people will have scores of DC properties to care about going forward and they would have been presented at less risk.

The first cinematic meet up between Superman and Batman
is the hook that would likely expose more people to Wonder Woman,Nightwing,The Flash,Green Lantern,Aquaman and
MM then any solo origin film would.

WB could then gauge audience reaction to the various characters and plan solo films based on actual fan reaction without having to risk millions on a solo film. Its genius.

  • cleverusername8

It seems strange to me that WB would be pursuing John as the Green Lantern in this movie when Hal Jordan is the front and center one in the comics and other media at the moment. Ever since both Rebirths, Hal and Barry Allen have been the characters that DC has been backing for their respective roles. It seems logical that they’ve continue this trend in the movieverse, right? Throwing John in here seems someone random since he hasn’t been a big player in DC lore since the DCAU days of JLU.

just a quick thought. filming for MOS took about 7 months. for MOS2, they’ve got those michigan studios booked for approx 7 months. so it seems like they’re just filming the sequel, with no immediate plans to shoot JL. what would be cool is if LR or another site gets a scoop that WB has reserved those studios (or other studios) past August of this year. that would be very, very interesting.

I think the failure of the Green Lantern film might be a big part of the reason why they will might not be so keen to use Hal Jordan again straight away, they’d much rather people forget about it rather than wondering if it has anything to do with their current films.
And John Stewart still has a fair amount of good will as a character amongst the general audiences, thanks to the Justice League cartoons.
They might’ve been off the air now for 6/7 years, but a reasonable portion of the general audience, that is in their late teens to early 20′s, will still think of the cartoon when someone talks about the Justice League. Because the cartoon reached a far wider audience than your average comic book does these days.
In fact I knew quite a few people who were slightly confused when the Green Lantern film came out, because they thought Green Lantern was black (and got even more confused when I tried to briefly explain the Green Lantern Corps to them.)

While that particular example may not be particularly far reaching, it does show some influence the cartoon had over the casual audience, and suggests that this association might’ve harmed the GL film slightly because it confused portions of the casual audience.

I guess I can see the whole cartoon appeal thing, but the Green Lantern movie flop isn’t likely the reason. Look at the Hulk. His movies never did outstandingly well on their own. Yet they kept him in Avengers due to his core role on the team and ended up turning opinions around for the character. The Green Lantern movie probably hurt, no doubt about it. But I don’t think it was the character that drove people away so much as its poor execution.

You call this a plan? More like straggling for stragglers, in denial.
Here’s a plan: first things first. How about we not make a movie or cast anyone, until we first have a spectacular Script. Dóh! How bout directors. Couldn’t we get Chris Nolan to direct the actors while Snyder focuses on big effects heavy shots? Already tried that? Didn’t work well together, did they? Double Dóh! I got it. Let’s just throw in the kitchen sink. The Rock’s always looking to stand before a camera & play like he’s acting. … And he’s kinda sorta Black, in a way, right? Perfect! Let’s throw more characters in – because that always makes up for failing to fully develop 1 character … right?

  • Django9000

Another thing – somewhat related. How must Warner Bros. feel about the simple, undeniable fact that Henry what’s-his-name is, quite frankly, not a household name after the first outing?
I guess cuz despite his chops & acting pedigree, and Amy Adams, and Michael Shannon’s & Russel Crowe’s … Snyder just couldn’t get them to read a single danged line with conviction, for an entire 2 hr movie.
With all those green-screens surrounding them, I can understand their difficulty … Oh well. Snyder knows what Americans & hence, the entire world REally wants. Let’s just make Superman a murderer, then weĺl make him cool ! Whooops ~(cue backfire & backlash …)

  • Django99000

Ben Affleck is a terrible example. He isn’t under contract with Marve, is he? He was in one Marvel comics movie, which wasn’t even under Marvel Studios. Now, over a decade later, he’s cast in a DC movie. That’s not necessarily an “obvious” example/ However, I don’t know if there’s any clause in the actors’ contracts. That’s clearly not for me to say.

What does enjoying movies about some of my favorite characters go have to do with “twerking for WB”. I don’t freak out every time a rumor comes around because I know it isn’t likely true, if you just looked at what was actually confirmed this movie sounds pretty awesome.

  • wat

Lol. Well Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong. How about them as examples? But yeah, non-compete clauses are possible but we don’t know. Hopefully Idris Elba does become John Stewart.

  • Johnny Black

    Mamoa = Lobo :)

  • ScreenWriter

Ryan Reynolds is technically a better example. I guess if we’re talking about any movie licensed by Marvel then you’d be right. I just don’t know if they sign their actors to 7, or 8 or however many picture contracts. Either way, it’s useless to argue about something so pointless. I just hope, and I think you’d agree with me, that they cast the best actor for the character they need to make the film the best possible.

  • wat

Definitely. Just because an actor also worked for your competition doesn’t take away from how good they would be for the role.

Since Thanos was a ripoff of Darkseid (like the Avengers was a ripoff of the Justice League) in the comics, I would love Darkseid to hit the big screen first. I bet they go with the Sinestro Corps and introduce whatever version of GL at the same time. NO WAY they use Starro!!

  • Dre Day

Man, EVERYBODY loves Idris Alba. Too bad he signed on with Marvel to play a pretty obscure and unimportant character. Hopefully DC films can RESCUE him, and lock down the Rock.

The examples I would’ve used for actors with TV commitments would have been Zachary Levi unable to be Fandral in Thor because he was busy with Chuck and was replaced with Joshua Dallas, then for Thor: The Dark World Joshua Dallas couldn’t return as Fandral because of Once Upon A Time so they got Zachary Levi.

  • James Parker

Said ^ a long time ago.

    Here is the Rock

  • DJRickyV

They should have saved Ryan Reynolds for the Deadpool movie and not try to pull a Chris Evans with him. Decent power ring effects but could’ve gone more Christopher Nolan with Hal Jordan’s origin than the lighter version Reynolds portrayed.

  • DJRickyV

Speaking of Irons, Michael Ironside might make a great Doomsday.

  • cell989

a rushed film never ends in good terms no matter whos at the helm of it, so much potential yet they are pressing on the Nitro boost button too early, its going to left them dry before the finish line

  • miranda

Back to back films are fine if they are done correct. Do not screw up the characters…i keep hearing they arengoing to de power wonder woman and make her and the amazons decendents of krypton……Do not do this to the character. Stay true to the comics.

I’d rather have The Rock play Cyborg. Think of how amazing the android prosthetics would look with his massive physique.

  • Brian Knockin

    #Trolling

  • Brian Knockin

Prob for the major roles I doubt Idris role would stop him he isnt a major character yet

  • Brian Knockin

His role isnt large enough to block him fully I can see if he was Black Panther or something these people are crazy if DC wanted him n he wanted it he would get it

  • Brian Knockin

I think people forget about Cyborg a lot but he is a main character in JL for years I think thats the best play

  • Brian Knockin

    Sounds amazing

  • wat

Agreed. He’s not a main character as Heimdall and has limited screen time. He should be fully able to be in a DC movie.

  • wat

I see people saying it’s not a good idea because most people know Cyborg to be a teen but I say that’s a poor excuse. Dwayne Johnson would rock (no pun intended, lolol) that role.

  • Madcap2112

He’s got a bigger part than Sif does, and Jamie Alexander has a non-compete clause in her contract.

  • JusticeBringer

It’s been part of the character since Green Lantern vol. 4, #26.

  • JusticeBringer

Incorrect. Stewart always had the USMC background. The JL/JLU cartoon simply made him a sniper.

  • JusticeBringer

    The Rock is black.

  • JusticeBringer

Victor Stone’s too young for The Rock.

  • JusticeBringer

They were not decent effects. His construct guns fired actual bullets.

  • October_1985

Vol. 4 was Rebirth, right? So its a fairly recent addition.

  • wat

What ages has he been depicted as?

  • Brian Knockin

In the 80′s toon he was older

  • wat

Exactly. Plus Cyborg isn’t important enough that his age isn’t able to changed to suit an actor.

  • Zac Cooke

Why are they rushing the freaking movies I mean damn make them one at a time just means the movies aren’t going to be that good I was looking forward to seening them but now not so much I will still go to see them but doesn’t mean I’m going to like them…

Not gonna happen this way. No way Affleck will tie up his schedule for a 12 to 14 month shoot. And The Rock will be cast as Lex Luthor… just you wait and see. Expect the announcement within a week.

  • That’s Too Bad

Why is Dwayne Johnson in everything? I was entertained by him the first few times, but he was a novelty. I grew bored with him a long, long time ago.

  • Josh White

indifferent at this point, I am not sure how to feel mainly because I have no idea what direction they are going with so I can’t be happy or sad yet.

Stewart being a sniper extended into the DC Comics universe too, when the GLs went against the Sinestro Corp.

Half black anyway. Samoan / Black Nova Scotian.
