Well, that Point Break remake that we’d all like to pretend isn’t happening…is still on the way, after all. Variety is reporting that the film, a redo of Kathryn Bigelow’s classic 1991 action film, has found its Johnny Utah to pit against Gerard Butler’s Bodhi. The original actors to play the roles were Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, respectively. This time around, the man standing on Utah’s surfboard will be Luke Bracey.
Bracey is a a little-known Australian actor who appeared in a soap opera down under called Home and Away. Stateside, his credits include Monte Carlo and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. He was on the recent shortlist to play Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey, a role that would eventually go to Jamie Dornan. In Point Break, he’ll play Utah, an undercover agent that attempts to infiltrate a criminal gang lead by the enigmatic Bodhi. As he falls for one of the girls linked to the gang, befriends Bodhi, and starts to fall under the spell of their lifestyle, it soon becomes hard for her to figure out where his allegiances lie. In the original, the gang was made up of surfers, this time around they’re described as being into extreme sports.
Yes, The Fast and The Furious lifted that premise from Point Break.
Ericson Core is attached to direct the project. Core’s only other big directing credit is the 2006 Mark Wahlberg flick Invincible. The writer, Kurt Wimmer, has quite a hefty resumé. It includes The Thomas Crown Affair, Equilibrium, Street Kings, and Salt. But it also includes the Total Recall remake, and Law Abiding Citizen.
No word yet on when we should expect Point Break in theaters, except for a vague release window of 2015.
